Chapter 15 - The Mother Who Knew EverythingRyan returned to the mansion alone.

Sarah followed later.
Not because he asked.
Because she knew this conversation would destroy him.
Diane sat in the library.
She already knew Charles had told him.
“You let me call him Dad.”
Her eyes filled.
“He raised you.”
“You let me believe Vale was a stranger.”
“Yes.”
“He’s my father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he used Sarah.”
Diane looked away.
“You knew he used our fertility treatment.”
“I didn’t know until after.”
“After what?”
“After Noah was born.”
Ryan laughed.
“You knew Noah could be Ethan’s biological son.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lucas was mine.”
“Yes.”
“You fought Noah’s inheritance because he wasn’t blood.”
Diane’s face hardened.
“Charles humiliated me.”
Ryan stared.
“So you punished a child.”
“No.”
“You chained him.”
Diane looked down.
“You forced him to eat from a dog tray.”
Silence.
“You hit him before.”
She said nothing.
“You made me delete it.”
“Yes.”
Ryan’s voice broke.
“And I did.”
Sarah stood in the doorway.
Diane looked at her.
No one spoke.
Ryan continued.
“I became you.”
Diane flinched.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He looked at Sarah.
“I hit my wife before asking one question.”
Sarah held his gaze.
Ryan looked back at Diane.
“You trained me to believe your pain mattered more than everyone else’s.”
Diane stood.
“I gave you everything.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You gave me fear.”
Diane’s face twisted.
“I protected you from Charles.”
“By lying about my father?”
“David was dangerous.”
“You still worked with him.”
“For a time.”
“You let him experiment on you.”
“I was twenty-two.”
Ryan froze.
Diane’s eyes filled.
“He told me I was infertile.”
Sarah frowned.
“Was she?”
Charles had said Diane carried an engineered embryo.
Diane continued:
“He said the only way I could have a child was through his program.”
Ryan stared.
“Did you know he was the father?”
“No.”
“When did you find out?”
“After you were born.”
“Then why stay connected?”
Diane’s laugh became bitter.
“Because he had proof.”
Blackmail.
Again.
“He could expose everything.”
“So you let him control you.”
“Yes.”
“For forty years?”
Diane’s face broke.
“Yes.”
Sarah saw something she had never expected.
Not innocence.
But victimhood layered beneath cruelty.
Diane had been used.
Then she became someone who used others.
Both could be true.
Sarah stepped closer.
“What happened with the pet-camera clip last time?”
Diane looked at her.
“I slapped Noah.”
“Why?”
“He knocked over a cup.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Diane continued:
“I was angry.”
“No excuse.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Diane looked at Noah’s empty playroom through the doorway.
“I didn’t like looking at him.”
Sarah’s voice became cold.
“Why?”
“He looked like Ethan.”
Silence.
Ryan stared.
Diane continued.
“Ethan looked like Rebecca.”
“Your husband’s other woman.”
“Yes.”
“And Vale’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
Diane laughed weakly.
“The entire family was in his face.”
Sarah understood.
Noah became a symbol of every humiliation Diane had endured.
And she punished him for existing.
Sarah said:
“That explains you.”
Diane looked up.
“It does not excuse you.”
Diane nodded.
Tears rolled down her face.
Then police entered.
Sarah had called them.
Diane looked at Ryan.
He did not intervene.
She was arrested for child endangerment and assault-related offenses stemming from the recordings.
Before she left, she looked at Noah.
He stood beside Sarah.
Diane opened her mouth.
Noah immediately moved behind his mother.
Diane stopped.
That was her answer.
No forgiveness.
Not now.
Maybe never.
After police left, Ryan sat on the staircase.
Sarah stood several feet away.
“I’m moving out.”
He nodded.
“With Noah.”
“Yes.”
“And Lucas.”
“Yes.”
“I want to see them.”
Sarah looked at him.
“You will.”
He looked surprised.
“You are their father.”
“Even Noah?”
Sarah stared.
“Do not ask me that again.”
His eyes filled.
She continued:
“But you need help.”
He nodded.
“You need to understand why you hit me.”
“Yes.”
“And why your mother’s version of events mattered more than what you could see with your own eyes.”
“Yes.”
“This marriage is not fixed because you discovered you were lied to.”
“I know.”
Sarah turned.
Ryan whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
She stopped.
“I know.”
It was the first apology she believed.
And still—
she walked away.
That evening, Ethan called.
His voice was tense.
“Vale contacted me.”
Sarah’s stomach tightened.
“What does he want?”
“The boys.”
“No.”
“He says Charles lied again.”
“About what?”
Ethan paused.
“Lucas.”
Sarah’s heart stopped.
“What about him?”
“Vale says Lucas isn’t the child taken from St. Matthew’s.”
Silence.
Sarah stared at the sleeping boy beside Noah.
“What?”
May you like
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“He says Baby A is still missing.”
