Chapter 7 - The Son They Buried Without a FuneralSarah screamed.

Not loudly.

The sound barely came out.

But Noah began crying immediately.

He felt everything she felt.

Sarah crouched.

“I’m okay.”

She wasn’t.

Noah touched her face.

She kissed his fingers.

Ryan stood completely still.

“My brother.”

Sarah looked up.

“Our son.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Their son.

Biology had become complicated.

But both babies had been born into their marriage.

Both were Sarah’s.

Both had been meant to be raised by them.

Sarah faced Diane.

“You told me one baby.”

“I didn’t tell you anything.”

“You let me believe.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Diane’s face hardened as if shame had become unbearable.

“Because Charles ordered it.”

Sarah stared.

“You obeyed him?”

“He said the baby wouldn’t survive.”

“But he did.”

“For how long, I didn’t know.”

“Where did they take him?”

“I don’t know.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Mom.”

“I don’t.”

“Who took him?”

“Dr. Vale.”

The false physician.

The man who had supposedly left St. Matthew’s before the birth.

Sarah whispered, “Martin Vale.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he now?”

Diane looked at Ryan.

“Ask the company.”

Ryan frowned.

“What?”

“Whitaker Development paid him.”

Ryan stared.

“For what?”

“Consulting.”

“Medical consulting for a property company?”

Diane said nothing.

Ryan pulled out his phone.

Corporate records.

Payments.

He searched.

Then stopped.

Five years of recurring transfers.

M. Vale Consulting LLC.

$18,000 every month.

Sarah stared.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Who authorized them?”

Ryan opened the approval chain.

His face changed.

He slowly turned the phone.

Authorization: Diane Whitaker.

Sarah looked at her.

Diane closed her eyes.

“I paid him to stay away.”

“From what?”

“From us.”

“Why?”

“He threatened Charles.”

“With what?”

“The truth.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened.

“Which truth?”

“All of it.”

The fertility program.

The altered records.

The second baby.

Charles’s staged death.

Maybe more.

Ryan stared at his mother.

“You’ve been paying him after Dad died.”

“Yes.”

“He was blackmailing you.”

“Yes.”

“Then he knows where Baby A went.”

Diane shook her head.

“He claimed he didn’t.”

Sarah said, “And you believed him?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you find out?”

Diane looked at Noah.

“Because Charles told me never to.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You hated Dad.”

“No.”

“You hated his trust.”

“That’s different.”

“You fought him.”

“Yes.”

“But even after he supposedly died, you kept following his orders.”

Diane’s expression twisted.

“You don’t understand your father.”

Ryan leaned closer.

“Then explain him.”

She looked tired suddenly.

Old.

“Charles didn’t fake his death to escape me.”

Sarah and Ryan both stopped.

“He faked it because Dr. Vale tried to kill him.”

Ryan whispered, “Why?”

“Because Charles was going to expose the fertility program.”

Sarah frowned.

“Then why keep Noah’s records hidden?”

“Because the program wasn’t only medical.”

Diane looked at the door.

As if afraid someone might hear.

Ryan said, “Go on.”

“Whitaker Foundation funded clinics across three states.”

Sarah felt dread.

“How many families?”

“Hundreds.”

“What did they do?”

Diane swallowed.

“They offered free or discounted fertility treatment.”

“And?”

“They collected genetic material.”

“For research?”

“At first.”

That phrase again.

Sarah’s stomach turned.

“What happened later?”

“Private clients started paying.”

“For what?”

Diane’s voice dropped.

“Selection.”

Ryan frowned.

“Selection of embryos?”

“No.”

Diane looked ashamed.

“Selection of bloodlines.”

Silence.

Sarah stared.

“What does that even mean?”

“Wealthy families who wanted children genetically connected to specific donors.”

Ryan looked sick.

“Secret surrogacy?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“Sometimes samples were switched.”

Sarah covered Noah’s ears instinctively.

Ryan whispered, “Without the mother knowing?”

Diane nodded.

The room went silent.

Human beings reduced to genetics.

Family lines manufactured in secret.

Sarah looked at Noah.

He was sucking his thumb.

Four years old.

He understood none of the corporate conspiracy around his birth.

Only that his mother was holding him.

Sarah whispered:

“Was I one of those women?”

Diane’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

“You know.”

“I don’t.”

“Who paid?”

“I never saw a buyer.”

Sarah’s heart stopped.

Buyer.

Someone had chosen whose genetic material fathered her child.

Maybe Charles.

Maybe Ethan.

Maybe someone else.

And the second baby had been taken.

Sarah looked at Ryan.

“Find Vale.”

He nodded.

Diane stood quickly.

“No.”

Sarah turned.

“Why?”

Diane’s face drained.

“Because if Vale knows you found the recording…”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

“He’ll come for Noah.”

Noah looked up at the sound of his name.

Ryan’s voice became cold.

“Why would he want Noah?”

May you like

Diane whispered:

“Because Noah is the only child from the program whose DNA Charles never allowed them to catalog.”
