Chapter 14 - The WarehouseAdrian called police.

Then Richard.

Then Scarlett insisted on coming.

Adrian refused.

She came anyway.

The abandoned Sterling records warehouse sat near the harbor, half-demolished and fenced off from redevelopment.

Twenty-six years earlier, Thomas Shaw died there.

Tonight, floodlights from police vehicles washed over its brick walls.

Edward had expected Adrian alone.

He got detectives.

Negotiators.

And his own father.

Edmund's car was parked outside.

Empty.

Police entered first.

Adrian was ordered to remain back.

He hated it.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

Then an officer emerged.

“No one inside.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“Building's empty.”

“Edmund's car is here.”

“Yes.”

Scarlett looked toward the river.

“Underground access?”

Richard nodded.

“There used to be archive tunnels.”

Police searched.

They found a stairwell behind a collapsed wall.

Below the warehouse was a concrete records vault.

Edmund sat inside.

Alive.

Uninjured.

Alone.

Adrian stared.

“Where's Edward?”

Edmund looked exhausted.

“He was never here.”

“What?”

“The call was a distraction.”

Adrian's phone rang.

Vivian's security chief.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“Someone entered Sterling Manor.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

“Where is Vivian?”

Silence.

“Where is my mother?”

“She was in the east sitting room.”

“Was?”

“She is gone.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Edward had pulled everyone to the warehouse.

Police.

Richard.

Scarlett.

Edmund.

And taken Vivian.

“Catherine?”

“Safe.”

“Lucas?”

“Not there.”

Adrian looked at Edmund.

“Your son took Vivian.”

Edmund went pale.

“No.”

“You knew.”

“No.”

“Then why lure you here?”

Edmund looked toward the old walls.

“Thomas.”

Adrian frowned.

Edmund approached one section.

“There was something here the night he died.”

“What?”

“A safe.”

Police checked the wall.

Behind newer bricks, they found it.

The fire had damaged the outer mechanism, but the inner compartment survived.

Inside:

Film negatives.

Account ledgers.

Audio tapes.

And Thomas Shaw's notebook.

Edmund started crying before anyone opened it.

His son had left evidence.

Twenty-six years waiting inside concrete.

Scarlett read the first pages.

Thomas documented everything.

Richard Sr.'s illegal political network.

Vivian's role.

Catherine's attempts to destroy records.

Samuel Pike's payments.

Edmund's own legal cover.

Nobody was clean.

Then came the night of the fire.

Thomas wrote that he planned to meet someone at the warehouse.

Someone who promised to help him expose Richard Sr.

Initials:

E.V.

Scarlett froze.

“My mother.”

Evelyn Vale.

Adrian's biological mother.

Thomas had been meeting Evelyn the night he died.

The final entry:

Evelyn says she has proof Vivian took her first child.

She says Edmund is the father.

Adrian stared.

Edmund closed his eyes.

He knew.

“You knew Adrian was yours?” Scarlett whispered.

Edmund answered:

“Not until years later.”

Thomas's notebook continued.

Evelyn feared Vivian.

Vivian couldn't have children after a medical complication.

Evelyn became pregnant by Edmund during an affair.

Edmund didn't know.

Vivian learned.

She offered Evelyn money.

Evelyn refused.

Then Richard Sr. intervened.

Evelyn's newborn son was taken through a private maternity arrangement.

Vivian raised him as Adrian.

Adrian felt sick.

His entire identity had been negotiated before he could open his eyes.

Scarlett touched his shoulder.

He didn't move.

The final page had been written only hours before the fire.

If anything happens tonight, it was not Catherine.

She thinks she's protecting Vivian, but she doesn't know the larger truth.

The person I'm meeting is terrified.

E.V. says Richard Sr. threatened her daughter.

Scarlett frowned.

“Daughter?”

She wasn't born yet.

Adrian looked at Edmund.

“Evelyn had another daughter before Scarlett?”

Edmund shook his head.

“No.”

Then Adrian understood.

The daughter wasn't Evelyn's.

Perhaps E.V. didn't mean Evelyn Vale.

Scarlett checked later pages.

No more.

Then police digitized an old cassette found inside.

The audio was damaged.

But playable.

Thomas's voice.

A second voice.

Female.

Adrian listened.

Thomas: “You need to tell Richard.”

Woman: “He'll never forgive me.”

Thomas: “He deserves to know Adrian isn't his.”

Woman: “If Richard finds out Edmund is the father, everything ends.”

Adrian recognized the voice.

Vivian.

Not Evelyn.

E.V. had been Evelyn? Perhaps Thomas coded meetings inaccurately.

The tape continued.

Thomas: “And the baby?”

Vivian: “Adrian is mine.”

Thomas: “No. You stole him.”

A slap.

Then Vivian's voice, shaking:

“I saved him.”

Thomas: “From his mother?”

“She was unstable.”

“She wanted her son.”

“She would've destroyed us.”

Thomas laughed.

“Us? Or you?”

The recording shifted.

Then another voice entered.

Male.

Richard Sr.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

His grandfather.

“You shouldn't have come here, Thomas.”

Thomas: “I made copies.”

Richard Sr.: “Where?”

Thomas: “Somewhere you'll never find.”

Then a struggle.

The recording ended.

Edmund was crying.

“My father.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew Grandfather was there?”

“No.”

“So Catherine didn't kill Thomas.”

“She locked one outer door.”

“But Richard Sr. was already inside.”

“Yes.”

Scarlett whispered:

“He killed him.”

Edmund closed his eyes.

“Maybe.”

Police would investigate.

But Adrian's thoughts returned to Vivian.

Edward had her.

Why?

His phone buzzed.

A video message.

Vivian appeared tied to a chair.

No visible injuries.

Behind her, Edward stood wearing a lion ring.

“Adrian.”

His voice was calm.

“You wanted evidence.”

He held up a document.

“I have the original adoption agreement.”

Adrian stared.

Edward continued.

“And the document proving Vivian knew exactly who Noah's genetic mother was before the embryo transfer.”

Scarlett went pale.

“So she lied.”

Adrian knew she had.

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“You can have all of it.”

“What do you want?” Adrian whispered.

Edward smiled.

“Sterling Holdings.”

Then he leaned close to Vivian.

“Or your mother disappears the way mine did.”

Video ended.

Scarlett stared at Adrian.

“What are you going to do?”

Adrian looked at Thomas's notebook.

At Edmund.

At Richard.

At the ruined warehouse built on secrets.

Then he said:

“Something nobody in this family ever does.”

May you like

“What?”

“Tell the truth before someone can use it against me.”
