Chapter 7 - The Heir Vivian WantedAdrian turned toward his father.

“What does that mean?”
Richard looked at Vivian.
She stared back with open hatred.
“Tell him,” Richard said.
“Don't.”
“Tell your son.”
Vivian said nothing.
Richard faced Adrian.
“The old trust doesn't pass automatically to the eldest child.”
“I know.”
Adrian had spent years studying Sterling governance.
Control passed to the designated lineal heir unless challenged.
Richard continued.
“There is a hidden amendment.”
Adrian frowned.
“What hidden amendment?”
“My father created it.”
Scarlett opened her briefcase.
“Is this what you mean?”
She removed a photocopy.
Vivian went still.
Scarlett placed it on the table.
STERLING FAMILY TRUST — SEALED SUCCESSION CODICIL.
Adrian stared.
“I've never seen this.”
“Neither had I until three weeks ago,” Scarlett said.
“Where did you get it?”
“Vivian's private archive.”
Vivian snapped:
“You stole confidential material.”
Scarlett laughed.
“You stole my eggs.”
Richard leaned over the page.
“This is it.”
Adrian read.
If the designated heir produces no eligible issue under the trust's bloodline requirements, succession transfers to the next qualifying descendant of Richard Sterling Sr.
Adrian frowned.
“Next qualifying descendant?”
Richard looked at Scarlett.
“My daughter.”
Scarlett went pale.
“No.”
Adrian understood.
If Noah were legally excluded…
Scarlett could inherit Adrian's controlling family interest.
But Scarlett shook her head.
“I don't want it.”
Vivian said coldly:
“What you want is irrelevant.”
Adrian looked at his mother.
“You brought Scarlett into the company because she could replace Noah.”
Vivian didn't answer.
“You discovered she was Dad's daughter.”
Silence.
“You arranged the DNA test.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to challenge Noah.”
Vivian's jaw tightened.
“I planned to protect Sterling Holdings.”
“From my seven-year-old?”
“From instability.”
Adrian stared.
“Whose instability?”
“Yours.”
The answer hit.
Vivian continued.
“You've been reckless since Claire died.”
Adrian laughed in disbelief.
“I raised my son.”
“You abandoned acquisitions.”
“Because they were terrible deals.”
“You closed the Montrose project.”
“It displaced eighty families.”
“You donated forty million dollars of family money.”
“To hospitals.”
“You act emotionally.”
Adrian stared.
“You mean I stopped acting like you.”
Vivian's eyes narrowed.
“Sterling Holdings cannot be managed through sentiment.”
Richard muttered:
“That's what my father used to say.”
Vivian ignored him.
Scarlett looked at the trust codicil.
“So you wanted Adrian to sign control to you tonight.”
“Yes.”
“And once you had control?”
Vivian said nothing.
“You planned to challenge Noah's eligibility.”
Adrian felt sick.
“And install Scarlett.”
Vivian finally answered.
“Temporarily.”
Scarlett laughed.
“No.”
“I would have stabilized the company.”
“And then?”
Vivian looked at her.
“You would have fulfilled your responsibility.”
“My responsibility?”
“As Richard's daughter.”
Scarlett stepped back.
“I don't belong to you.”
“No one in this family understands duty anymore.”
Noah's small voice cut through the room.
“Grandma?”
Vivian looked at him.
He stood beside Adrian, still wrapped in the dark jacket.
“Did you put me outside because you don't want me?”
The question broke something.
Vivian's face softened instantly.
“No.”
Noah waited.
She approached carefully.
“I love you.”
He moved behind Adrian.
Vivian stopped.
Noah whispered:
“You told me I was a problem.”
Adrian looked at her.
She closed her eyes.
“I was angry.”
“You said Daddy would be better after I disappeared.”
Vivian went pale.
Richard turned away.
Scarlett covered her mouth.
Adrian's hands shook.
“Did you say that?”
Vivian whispered:
“I meant from the gala.”
Noah looked confused.
“You said from everything.”
Adrian stepped toward his mother.
“How long have you been talking to him like this?”
“Adrian—”
“How long?”
No answer.
Noah looked up.
“She says Mom dying made you weak.”
Adrian stopped.
“Vivian.”
“She says if I wasn't born, Mom would still be alive.”
Scarlett started crying.
Adrian looked at Noah.
“Come here.”
He lifted him.
“No.”
Noah's eyes filled.
“No what?”
“What Grandma said.”
Adrian held his son tightly.
“Your mother's death was not your fault.”
“She got sick after I was born.”
“Not because you were born.”
Noah looked toward Vivian.
“She said you used to be happy.”
Adrian felt rage unlike anything earlier.
But Noah was watching.
So he spoke calmly.
“I was happy because your mom was alive.”
Noah looked down.
“And after she died, I was sad.”
Adrian kissed his forehead.
“But you are the reason I kept going.”
Noah's face crumpled.
He buried himself against Adrian.
Vivian looked away.
Richard watched her.
“You did to Noah what your father did to you.”
She snapped her head toward him.
“Don't.”
“What did he do?” Adrian asked.
Vivian's expression changed.
Richard hesitated.
“Your grandfather treated children as succession assets.”
Adrian stared.
“He ranked us.”
Vivian looked furious.
“Stop.”
Richard continued.
“Who was useful. Who wasn't.”
Catherine laughed bitterly from the champagne table.
“Vivian was useful.”
Adrian looked at his aunt.
Catherine's smile was gone.
“I wasn't.”
“What happened?”
“Our father chose Vivian to inherit influence over the family trust.”
Richard nodded.
“And Catherine was married off.”
Catherine looked down.
Adrian had never heard this.
“Vivian learned early that being chosen meant survival.”
Richard looked at her.
“And she spent the rest of her life choosing and discarding everyone else.”
Vivian's eyes filled.
“You all benefited from what I built.”
Richard shook his head.
“No. We survived it.”
Scarlett placed the succession codicil down.
“There may be another problem.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What now?”
“The codicil names ‘the next qualifying descendant of Richard Sterling Sr.’”
“Yes.”
“Richard isn't his only child.”
Catherine went still.
Adrian frowned.
“My grandfather had two daughters and Dad.”
Richard looked toward Catherine.
Scarlett continued.
“If Adrian's line were excluded, Scarlett might not be next.”
Vivian's face changed.
Catherine set down her glass.
Adrian looked between them.
“Who is?”
Scarlett pulled another document from the file.
A birth certificate.
The name had been redacted in the copy.
But the mother's name was visible.
Catherine Sterling.
Adrian stared.
“You had a child?”
Catherine said nothing.
Richard looked stunned.
“When?”
Scarlett read the date.
“Thirty-eight years ago.”
Adrian's pulse jumped.
That child would now be thirty-eight.
Almost exactly his age.
“What happened to the baby?”
Catherine's face lost all warmth.
“Our father took him.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“He said I was unfit.”
Richard whispered:
“You told me the baby died.”
Catherine looked at him.
“That's what Father told everyone.”
Adrian felt another impossible secret opening beneath the first.
“Did he?”
Catherine shook her head.
“No.”
Vivian stepped backward.
Adrian saw it.
“You know.”
Vivian's silence answered.
Catherine looked at her sister.
“Tell them.”
Vivian whispered:
“Not now.”
“Tell them.”
Adrian felt Noah gripping his jacket.
“Where is Catherine's son?”
Vivian closed her eyes.
Then Scarlett's phone—recovered from Vivian's office by Marcus—began ringing.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared at it.
Scarlett answered carefully.
“Hello?”
A male voice spoke.
Calm.
Familiar enough that Adrian felt something strange before he knew why.
“Put Vivian on.”
Scarlett looked at Adrian.
“Who is this?”
The man laughed softly.
“Ask her what she did with Catherine's baby.”
Vivian went white.
The caller continued.
“Then ask her why she raised him under another woman's name.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
Scarlett put the call on speaker.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Lucas.”
Vivian's knees nearly buckled.
Catherine stopped breathing.
May you like
And the voice said:
“Vivian Sterling is my mother.”
