Chapter 15 - Adrian Breaks the Family RuleAt 8:00 the next morning, Sterling Holdings scheduled an emergency press conference.

Every advisor told Adrian not to do it.

Corporate counsel begged him to wait.

Board members threatened removal.

Public relations prepared six different statements designed to say nothing.

Adrian rejected all of them.

Scarlett stood beside him.

Richard watched from backstage.

Noah remained safely with Marcus and private security.

Adrian walked to the podium.

Dozens of cameras turned.

He began:

“My name is Adrian Sterling.”

Nobody expected what followed.

“For decades, my family has hidden information to protect wealth, reputation, and control.”

Board members watching remotely nearly had heart attacks.

Adrian continued.

“Last night, my seven-year-old son was locked outside our family home in freezing rain because he accidentally discovered documents certain members of my family wanted concealed.”

Instant explosion.

Questions.

Adrian lifted one hand.

“I am not taking questions yet.”

He disclosed Vivian's attempt to force the trust amendment.

He disclosed the guardianship petition.

Scarlett stepped forward and confirmed her own identity as Adrian's biological half-sister.

Then Adrian said:

“I learned yesterday that the woman who raised me, Vivian Sterling, is not my biological mother.”

The room erupted.

He continued.

“My biological mother was Evelyn Vale.”

More shouting.

“And the man I believed was my biological father, Richard Sterling, is not.”

Richard closed his eyes backstage.

Adrian looked into the cameras.

“I do not yet know what legal consequences these discoveries will have.”

He did know his biological father was likely Edmund.

But that information remained under active police review.

“I do know this.”

He paused.

“My son's safety matters more than succession.”

“The company's reputation matters less than truth.”

“And anyone who expects me to hide wrongdoing to protect the Sterling name misunderstands what happens next.”

Reporters shouted.

Adrian finished.

“Effective immediately, I am requesting an independent forensic audit of Sterling Holdings going back forty years.”

Several board members began calling.

Adrian turned his phone off.

Scarlett almost smiled.

“You just detonated the company.”

“Good.”

“You might lose control.”

“Good.”

“You might lose billions.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Still good.”

For the first time, Scarlett laughed freely.

Then Adrian's secure phone rang.

Edward.

He answered.

“You're an idiot.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“That seems to run in the family.”

“You destroyed your leverage.”

“No.”

“You went public.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“So your documents can't hurt me.”

Silence.

Edward had built his entire strategy around secrets.

Adrian had removed their value.

“Where is Vivian?”

Edward's voice hardened.

“You think honesty makes you brave?”

“No.”

“You still want her alive.”

“Yes.”

“After what she did?”

“Yes.”

That answer surprised even Scarlett.

Edward laughed.

“Why?”

Adrian looked out at the reporters.

“Because I'm not her.”

Silence.

“Where?”

Edward gave an address.

An old coastal estate once owned by Richard Sr.

Police traced the call simultaneously.

Adrian didn't hide that.

Edward probably knew.

Within an hour, tactical teams surrounded the property.

Vivian was found inside.

Alive.

Edward was gone.

Again.

He'd left the documents.

That surprised everyone.

The original adoption agreement.

Vivian's signature.

Evelyn's falsified consent.

Clinic records proving Vivian knowingly transferred Scarlett's eggs into Claire's IVF cycle.

And another document.

One Adrian didn't expect.

A will.

Richard Sterling Sr.'s final private will.

It named an heir nobody had discussed.

Not Richard.

Not Adrian.

Not Scarlett.

Not Lucas.

Not Samuel.

It named Thomas Shaw.

Edmund's dead son.

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

Edmund read the will with shaking hands.

Richard Sr. had apparently planned to recognize Thomas as his successor shortly before Thomas threatened exposure.

Scarlett whispered:

“Was Thomas another Sterling?”

Edmund went silent.

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

Edmund began crying.

“Thomas wasn't mine.”

“What?”

“My wife had an affair.”

Richard stared.

“With who?”

Edmund looked at him.

“Your father.”

Adrian almost laughed from exhaustion.

Thomas Shaw had been Richard Sterling Sr.'s biological son.

Meaning his death didn't merely eliminate a whistleblower.

It eliminated a potential heir.

Edmund had raised him.

Richard Sr. secretly fathered him.

Then possibly killed him.

The inheritance war reached backward farther than anyone imagined.

Scarlett examined the will.

“If Thomas died before inheriting…”

“His descendants might have a claim,” Adrian said.

Edmund shook his head.

“He had no children.”

Edward called again.

This time Scarlett answered.

“You left the will.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian was right.”

She frowned.

“About what?”

“Secrets only have power while they're secret.”

Scarlett looked at Adrian.

Edward continued.

“So here's one more.”

Scarlett's face tightened.

“What?”

“Thomas had a child.”

Edmund stood.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“He would've told me.”

“He didn't know.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Of course.

“Who?”

Edward laughed softly.

“You've already met her.”

Scarlett looked around.

Catherine?

No.

Vivian?

Impossible.

Then Edward said:

“Thomas Shaw's daughter wore a red dress to the gala.”

Scarlett stopped breathing.

Adrian stared at her.

“No.”

Edward continued.

“Evelyn wasn't your biological mother.”

Scarlett whispered:

“Stop.”

“The woman who raised you took you in after your real mother died giving birth.”

Edmund nearly collapsed.

“My granddaughter?”

Scarlett shook her head violently.

“No.”

Edward's voice softened.

“Ask for the original birth record.”

The call ended.

Scarlett looked at Adrian.

Her entire identity had just broken for the second time in twenty-four hours.

Adrian took her hand.

“We verify.”

She nodded through tears.

Evidence.

Not stories.

But before they could request anything, Noah came running from the adjoining secure room.

“Dad!”

Adrian turned.

Noah held something.

A photograph.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was in Grandma's envelope.”

Adrian took it.

Scarlett stood beside him.

The photograph showed a young Thomas Shaw.

Beside him—

a pregnant woman.

On the back:

Our baby girl.

Scarlett whispered:

“That's my mother.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You recognize her?”

“No.”

She touched the photograph.

“But I recognize the necklace.”

The woman wore a small ruby pendant.

Scarlett reached beneath her shirt.

She had the same pendant.

Her mother Evelyn had given it to her on her eighteenth birthday.

Which meant Evelyn Vale had not been Scarlett's mother.

She had been the woman who raised Thomas Shaw's child.

Adrian stared at the photograph.

Suddenly the trust succession changed again.

If Thomas had been Richard Sr.'s biological son…

Scarlett was his direct descendant.

Possibly the strongest living claim.

Scarlett laughed through tears.

“I still don't want the damn company.”

Noah looked at her.

“I don't want it either.”

Adrian smiled.

“Smartest two people in the family.”

Then Noah pointed at the pregnant woman in the photograph.

“Who is she?”

Adrian turned it toward the light.

On the corner, partially hidden behind Thomas, stood another woman.

Vivian.

Watching them.

May you like

And written in Vivian's handwriting across the bottom:

THIS CHILD CAN NEVER INHERIT.
