Chapter 16 - The Child Vivian HidThe original birth record took three days to locate.

Scarlett refused to speculate.

Adrian respected that.

They waited.

No dramatic declarations.

No family mythology.

Just documents.

When the call came, Scarlett sat beside Adrian in a private conference room.

The record named the mother:

Rebecca Hale.

The father field:

Thomas Edmund Shaw.

Scarlett closed her eyes.

Rebecca died from complications six hours after delivery.

The infant girl was transferred to temporary care.

Three weeks later, the baby entered a private adoption.

Adoptive mother:

Evelyn Vale.

Scarlett whispered:

“She raised me.”

“Yes.”

“She never told me.”

Adrian looked at the rest of the file.

An attorney handled the adoption.

Edmund Shaw.

Scarlett stared.

“My grandfather.”

Biological grandfather through Thomas.

Yet Edmund hadn't known Scarlett was Thomas's child.

Or claimed he hadn't.

They confronted him.

He broke down.

“I handled hundreds of private family matters.”

“You didn't recognize Rebecca's name?”

“I knew Thomas dated someone named Rebecca.”

“Did you know she was pregnant?”

“No.”

“Why handle the adoption?”

“Vivian asked me to.”

Scarlett laughed bitterly.

“Vivian.”

Always Vivian.

Edmund continued.

“She said Rebecca was a former employee who died with no family.”

“And Evelyn?”

“She volunteered.”

“Why?”

Edmund looked down.

“I don't know.”

Adrian did.

Evelyn had already lost Adrian.

Vivian took her first child.

Then years later, she was given another infant.

Scarlett.

Maybe Evelyn accepted because she couldn't bear another child being swallowed by Sterling secrecy.

Scarlett whispered:

“She saved me.”

Adrian nodded.

“Looks that way.”

Vivian eventually agreed to speak with investigators.

Adrian attended only because Scarlett asked him.

Vivian sat across the table without jewelry.

Without the gold dress.

Without servants.

She looked smaller.

Scarlett placed the photograph between them.

“Why?”

Vivian stared at Rebecca and Thomas.

“Because Thomas was going to inherit.”

“So?”

“He was going to expose everything.”

“So your father killed him?”

“I don't know.”

“You knew Scarlett was his child.”

“Yes.”

“And you hid her.”

“I protected her.”

Scarlett laughed.

“There it is.”

Vivian flinched.

Scarlett leaned forward.

“You don't get to use that word anymore.”

Vivian's eyes filled.

“If Father knew Thomas had a daughter, he would've controlled her too.”

“So you gave me to Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“Why Evelyn?”

Vivian looked at Adrian.

“Because I owed her.”

The room went quiet.

“For stealing Adrian?”

Vivian nodded.

Adrian felt something strange.

Not forgiveness.

Never that.

But an admission.

Finally.

Vivian continued.

“I couldn't have children.”

“You could have adopted honestly.”

“Yes.”

“But you wanted Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And Richard wanted Evelyn.”

Vivian's mouth trembled.

“Yes.”

“So you took Evelyn's son and told Richard he was yours.”

“Yes.”

Scarlett stared.

“Then why did Evelyn agree to raise me?”

“She didn't know who you were at first.”

“When she discovered it?”

“She kept you.”

“Why?”

Vivian smiled sadly.

“Because Evelyn was better than me.”

Adrian looked away.

That might have been the first true thing Vivian said without qualification.

Scarlett asked:

“Did you knowingly use my eggs for Noah?”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Adrian clenched his jaw.

“Why?”

Vivian looked toward him.

“You were planning to marry Claire without a prenuptial succession agreement.”

Adrian laughed.

“You created my son to solve trust law?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Claire desperately wanted a child.”

“That doesn't answer why Scarlett.”

Vivian swallowed.

“Because I knew Scarlett was Thomas's daughter.”

Adrian stopped.

Scarlett went pale.

Vivian continued.

“If Noah was conceived using Adrian's sperm and Scarlett's egg, he would carry both surviving lines.”

Adrian stared.

“You were trying to create an unbeatable heir.”

“Yes.”

Scarlett began crying.

Not softly.

Angrily.

“You used my body to engineer your dynasty.”

Vivian whispered:

“Yes.”

Adrian stood.

He couldn't remain seated.

Vivian looked at him.

“I thought it would end the succession disputes.”

“You created one.”

“I didn't know the old consanguinity clause would become relevant.”

“You knew every clause.”

“I thought it could be removed later.”

“By forcing me to sign.”

Vivian looked down.

“Yes.”

Adrian finally understood the full shape.

Noah had been planned as a legal solution.

A boy carrying multiple Sterling branches.

Vivian believed that gave him strength.

Then she discovered the old bloodline clause could exclude him because of the close genetic relationship.

So she needed Adrian to sign a new trust structure removing the problem.

But Adrian resisted.

Edmund and Edward exploited the moment.

Everything collapsed.

Scarlett stood.

“Was Claire told?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Vivian.

“You lied earlier.”

“Yes.”

“Did you give Claire those pills?”

“Yes.”

His stomach tightened.

“Did they cause her cancer?”

Vivian started crying.

“I don't know.”

“Why give them?”

“She was experiencing severe hormonal symptoms.”

“From the pregnancy?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know the clinic used unapproved compounds?”

“No.”

Marcus's forensic report supported part of that.

The pills contained a hormone mixture no longer approved.

There was no way to prove they caused Claire's cancer.

No direct causal link.

No murder.

Just another reckless act hidden because Vivian believed she could manage outcomes.

Adrian sat again.

“Claire died without knowing?”

“She learned about Scarlett's eggs before she died.”

“From you?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Vivian looked toward Scarlett.

“Evelyn.”

Scarlett froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“But she died before Claire.”

“Eight years ago.”

Claire died six years ago.

Evelyn had been alive when Noah was born.

Of course.

Vivian continued.

“Evelyn discovered the clinic transfer.”

Scarlett stared.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“She tried.”

“What?”

Vivian looked ashamed.

“I stopped her.”

“How?”

“Money.”

Scarlett laughed.

“That wouldn't stop her.”

“No.”

Vivian's voice dropped.

“So I threatened Adrian.”

Adrian stared.

“With what?”

“The truth that Evelyn was your biological mother.”

Adrian almost smiled from disbelief.

“You threatened to expose your own crime?”

“I told her I would frame Evelyn as having sold you.”

Scarlett's face twisted with disgust.

Vivian continued.

“She feared you would hate her.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Another person silenced by shame someone else manufactured.

Scarlett looked at Vivian.

“What happened to all the letters?”

“Some are in the red file.”

“Some burned.”

“Yes.”

“Others?”

Vivian hesitated.

“Evelyn kept copies.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Scarlett stared.

Then Noah's piece of bread flashed through Adrian's mind.

The man.

Edward.

The office.

The red file.

Maybe Edward hadn't gone there only for succession records.

Maybe he'd been looking for Evelyn's letters.

Because Evelyn had raised Scarlett.

And knew enough to destroy every Sterling lie.

Adrian called Edward.

No answer.

Then his phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived.

A wooden box.

Inside, dozens of letters.

Caption:

EVELYN TOLD THE TRUTH.

Another message followed.

MEET ME IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY SHE DIED.

Scarlett went white.

Adrian stared.

Evelyn's death eight years ago had been ruled a car accident.

He looked at Scarlett.

“No.”

She understood.

“Another accident.”

Vivian whispered:

“It wasn't me.”

Adrian looked at her.

For once, that didn't matter.

May you like

Because someone else had been protecting Sterling secrets long before Vivian lost control.

And Edward claimed to know who.
