Chapter 17 - Evelyn's Last LettersEdward chose a public place.

No tricks.
A quiet waterfront café surrounded by police surveillance Adrian didn't bother hiding.
Scarlett came.
Adrian came.
Edward arrived carrying the wooden box.
He looked older in daylight.
Not monstrous.
Not cinematic.
Just a man who had carried resentment for too long.
He placed the box between them.
“These belonged to Evelyn.”
Scarlett touched the lid.
“Where did you get them?”
“She mailed them to Thomas's old post-office box.”
“When?”
“Years after Thomas died.”
“Why?”
“She discovered I was alive.”
Scarlett frowned.
“Did she know who I was?”
“Yes.”
“My biological parents?”
“Yes.”
“And she never told me.”
Edward's face softened.
“She planned to.”
Scarlett opened the box.
Letters.
Photographs.
Clinic records.
A diary.
One envelope labeled SCARLETT — WHEN SHE'S READY.
Scarlett's hands trembled.
Adrian touched her wrist.
“You don't have to read it now.”
“Yes.”
She opened it.
Evelyn's handwriting.
My darling girl,
I did not give birth to you.
But I have been your mother every day since you were three weeks old.
Scarlett began crying.
She kept reading.
Your biological father was Thomas Shaw.
Your biological mother was Rebecca Hale.
They loved each other.
Your father died before he knew you existed.
Your mother died bringing you into the world.
I was asked to care for you temporarily.
I said yes because I had already lost one child and could not bear to watch another child become property in the hands of the Sterling family.
Scarlett looked toward Adrian.
He closed his eyes.
Evelyn wrote about him too.
The son taken from her.
Adrian.
She had watched from a distance.
School photographs.
News articles.
Never approaching because Vivian threatened legal destruction.
I hope one day Adrian learns that I never sold him.
I never abandoned him.
He was taken from me while I was medicated after delivery.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Vivian had always said Evelyn agreed.
Another lie.
Edward watched him.
“I verified hospital logs.”
“You have them?”
He slid over copies.
Medication records.
A discharge irregularity.
Edmund's legal signature.
Adrian stared.
“Did Edmund know she was drugged?”
Edward shook his head.
“Probably not.”
“Probably isn't evidence.”
“No.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Edward had learned.
Scarlett continued reading.
Evelyn eventually discovered Vivian had used Scarlett's frozen eggs.
She confronted the clinic.
Obtained records.
Planned to tell Adrian and Scarlett.
Three days later, her car crashed.
Adrian stared at Edward.
“What do you know?”
He placed another folder on the table.
“Evelyn's brake line was cut.”
Scarlett stopped.
“No.”
“Police never documented it.”
Adrian's heartbeat accelerated.
“Who did?”
“Private mechanic.”
“Why wasn't it reported?”
“It was.”
“To whom?”
Edward looked toward the Sterling empire in the distance.
“Sterling Security.”
Adrian felt cold.
Vivian's private security division had handled family crises for decades.
“Who ran it then?”
Edward answered:
“Graham Cole.”
Adrian knew the name.
Graham had retired five years earlier.
Longtime Sterling security chief.
Loyal to Vivian.
Too loyal.
“Did Vivian order it?”
Edward shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Scarlett closed the letter.
“Where is Cole?”
“Arizona.”
Adrian called police before leaving the café.
Graham Cole was questioned within two days.
He denied sabotage.
Then investigators showed him the mechanic report.
His signature appeared on a receipt acknowledging it.
Cole broke.
He admitted receiving the report.
Admitted hiding it.
But denied cutting the brake line.
“Who ordered you to bury it?” detectives asked.
Cole named Vivian.
Adrian's stomach turned.
Vivian denied it.
Forensic review of old communications found something unexpected.
The instruction did not come from Vivian.
It came from an email account designed to resemble hers.
One letter different.
Spoofed.
Someone framed Vivian.
Scarlett looked at Adrian.
“Edward?”
He had motive to expose, not hide.
Edmund?
Possible.
Catherine?
Possible.
Samuel Pike?
Possible.
Then investigators traced an archived login.
Location:
Sterling Holdings executive office.
User credential:
Richard Sterling.
Adrian stared.
Richard was supposedly dead at the time.
But alive.
Hidden.
“Dad.”
Richard met Adrian privately.
He saw the email and went pale.
“I didn't send it.”
“Were you in Boston?”
“No.”
“Where?”
“Montreal.”
“Can you prove it?”
“Yes.”
Records confirmed Richard was in Canada under an alias.
Someone used his old Sterling credentials.
Who still had them?
Edmund.
Vivian.
Graham Cole.
And one other person.
Richard Sr.'s former executive assistant.
Margaret Shaw.
Edmund's wife.
Thomas and Edward's mother.
Adrian stared at the personnel file.
Margaret had died three years earlier.
But before her death, she'd worked quietly inside Sterling administration for decades.
Scarlett whispered:
“She lost Thomas.”
Adrian nodded.
“What if she blamed Evelyn?”
“Why?”
Because Evelyn had planned to meet Thomas the night he died.
Perhaps Margaret believed Thomas would've survived if he hadn't been involved with Sterling secrets.
They found Margaret's journals in Edward's storage.
Edward claimed he'd never read them all.
Inside, police discovered years of rage.
At Vivian.
At Richard Sr.
At Evelyn.
One line stood out:
Evelyn still has children while mine is ash.
Scarlett went pale.
Adrian continued.
Another entry:
She will not expose Sterling. Not because I love them. Because Thomas died for the truth, and she does not get to use his death to save herself.
Then, dated two days before Evelyn's crash:
I followed her today.
Scarlett stopped reading.
Adrian closed the journal.
Evidence later showed Margaret Shaw had indeed tampered with Evelyn's vehicle.
Not Vivian.
Not Edward.
Not Edmund.
A grieving mother had killed another mother because decades of secrecy had turned grief into vengeance.
Scarlett sat in silence.
Then said:
“So everybody was wrong.”
Adrian looked at her.
“About what?”
“Everyone kept looking for one villain.”
She stared at the mountain of documents.
“But this whole family became the villain.”
Adrian understood.
Vivian had done terrible things.
Richard had abandoned people.
Edmund covered crimes.
Catherine hid truths.
Samuel sabotaged.
Margaret killed.
Richard Sr. created the system that taught them power mattered more than people.
And innocent children inherited the consequences.
Noah entered the room later with Marcus.
He carried a new piece of toast.
Adrian stared.
Noah noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You're looking at my bread.”
Scarlett laughed.
Adrian laughed too.
Noah climbed into his lap.
“Are we done with secrets?”
Adrian looked at Scarlett.
Then at the boxes.
“Almost.”
Noah sighed dramatically.
“Grown-ups are exhausting.”
He wasn't wrong.
Then Scarlett's phone rang.
Sterling Holdings board chair.
Emergency meeting.
The board had voted.
Adrian was being temporarily removed as CEO pending the audit.
He listened.
Then smiled.
Scarlett stared.
“You're okay?”
“Yes.”
“You just lost the company.”
Adrian looked at Noah.
“No.”
May you like
He kissed his son's forehead.
“I think I finally got something back.”
