THE $200 MILLION SECRET / Chapter 1 / 20

The Father No One Wanted to See

Michael Harrison had spent sixty-eight years learning how to remain invisible.

It was not because he was ashamed of himself.

It was because he had discovered, long ago, that real power rarely needed to announce itself.

That evening, however, Michael had no intention of hiding.

He stood outside the enormous Beverly Hills mansion belonging to his son, Ethan Harrison, holding a small birthday gift wrapped in deep-blue paper.

The old man looked completely out of place.

His dark-brown wool coat had faded from years of use. His beige sweater was worn around the collar. His black leather shoes were heavily scuffed.

Inside the mansion, everything was different.

Crystal chandeliers.

White marble floors.

Designer furniture.

Champagne flowing freely.

Dozens of wealthy guests laughing beneath golden lights.

Michael looked through the glass doors for several seconds.

Then he smiled quietly.

His son was thirty-five today.

For Michael, that was reason enough to come.

He stepped inside.

Several guests immediately noticed him.

Their conversations became quieter.

A woman near the champagne table glanced at his shoes.

A businessman looked at his coat.

Someone whispered something.

Michael pretended not to notice.

Then Ethan saw him.

The smile disappeared from Ethan's face.

For several seconds, father and son simply stared at each other.

Michael raised the gift box.

“Happy birthday, son.”

Ethan looked around nervously.

His friends were watching.

His business partners were watching.

His beautiful fiancée was standing only a few feet away.

Ethan walked toward Michael.

“Dad,” he whispered.

Michael smiled.

“I wanted to surprise you.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“You shouldn't have come.”

The words were quiet.

But they hurt more than shouting would have.

Michael looked at the guests.

Then back at his son.

“I just wanted to give you something.”

Ethan grabbed his arm.

“Come with me.”

He pulled Michael toward a quieter hallway.

Michael followed without resistance.

The music continued behind them.

When they reached the marble staircase, Ethan finally turned.

“Dad, go home.”

Michael blinked.

“I don't understand.”

“I don't want people here knowing you're my father.”

Silence.

Michael looked down at the gift box in his hands.

He had spent weeks choosing it.

He had imagined Ethan opening it.

He had imagined his son smiling.

Instead, Ethan looked embarrassed.

“Please,” Ethan whispered. “Don't make this difficult.”

Michael slowly nodded.

Then he held out the gift.

“I just wanted you to have this.”

Ethan stared at it.

And then something inside him snapped.

His hand moved.

The slap echoed through the mansion.

The birthday music stopped.

The gift box fell onto the marble floor.

Michael's face turned slightly from the impact.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Michael slowly turned back toward his son.

His eyes were completely dry.

Then he reached inside his old coat.

He pulled out a smartphone.

Ethan frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Michael calmly pressed one number.

The call connected.

“Cancel the deal.”

Ethan froze.

Michael continued.

“All of it.”

A voice on the other end answered nervously.

“But, sir... that's the two-hundred-million-dollar investment.”

Michael looked directly into Ethan's eyes.

“I know.”

Then he ended the call.

Ethan's face suddenly went pale.

May you like

For the first time that evening...

Michael looked like the most powerful man in the room.
