THE $200 MILLION SECRET / Chapter 2 / 20

The Gift on the Marble Floor

The mansion remained silent long after Michael left.

No one knew what to say.

The birthday cake stood untouched.

The champagne glasses remained half full.

The gift box Michael had dropped still lay on the marble floor.

Ethan stared at it.

He could not move.

Two hundred million dollars.

The words repeated inside his head.

His closest business partner, Daniel, approached cautiously.

“What did he mean by cancel the deal?”

Ethan swallowed.

“My father doesn't have two hundred million dollars.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You're sure?”

“Absolutely.”

But Ethan's voice lacked confidence.

His father had never lived like a wealthy man.

Michael drove an old sedan.

He lived in a modest house.

He wore inexpensive clothing.

He had never shown interest in luxury.

So how could he possibly control a $200 million investment?

Ethan picked up the gift box.

It was heavier than he expected.

He opened it.

Inside was a small antique watch.

There was no brand name.

No diamonds.

Nothing impressive.

Just an old mechanical watch.

A folded piece of paper rested beneath it.

Ethan opened the note.

Only one sentence was written.

“Time reveals what money hides.”

Ethan frowned.

“What does this mean?”

His fiancée approached.

“Who gave you that?”

“My father.”

She looked at the watch.

“It's beautiful.”

Ethan closed the box.

“It isn't worth anything.”

But Daniel suddenly looked concerned.

“You should find out.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“Why?”

“Because I just received a message from our investment bank.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“What message?”

Daniel handed him his phone.

The screen showed an official notification.

TRANSFER STATUS: SUSPENDED.

INVESTOR AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Ethan's breathing became shallow.

“That's impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The bank says the entire funding structure was frozen thirty seconds ago.”

Ethan looked at the timestamp.

Thirty seconds.

That was exactly when Michael had made the phone call.

Ethan suddenly understood.

His father hadn't been bluffing.

The $200 million investment was real.

And Michael controlled it.

Ethan walked toward the front doors.

“Where is he?”

Daniel stopped him.

“You don't know where he lives?”

Ethan hesitated.

Of course he knew.

But he had not visited his father's house in almost three years.

He had been too busy building his own life.

Too busy becoming successful.

Too embarrassed by the old man who had raised him.

Ethan finally said,

“I'll find him.”

That night, he drove alone.

He reached Michael's modest house just before midnight.

The lights were off.

Ethan knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then he noticed something strange.

The front door was unlocked.

Ethan slowly pushed it open.

“Dad?”

Silence.

The house looked almost untouched.

A chair was pulled away from the dining table.

An old photograph sat beside an open notebook.

Ethan picked it up.

It showed Michael decades younger.

Standing beside another man.

The other man's face had been scratched out.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.

October 14, 1998.

And beneath it...

“Never trust the man who signs for you.”

May you like

Ethan stared at the words.

For the first time, he wondered whether his father had been hiding something far more dangerous than money.
