THE $200 MILLION SECRET / Chapter 7 / 20

The Secret Michael Never Told His Son

Michael sat at the old dining table.

Ethan remained standing.

For years, he had imagined his father as cold.

Emotionally distant.

Almost indifferent.

Now he was beginning to understand that silence could have another meaning.

Fear.

“Tell me everything,” Ethan said.

Michael looked at him.

“You were born into a war you never knew existed.”

“What war?”

“A corporate war.”

Michael explained that Harrison Holdings had become enormously valuable during the 1990s.

Victor Hale wanted control.

He offered Michael a partnership.

Michael refused.

Victor became aggressive.

He threatened the company.

Then he threatened Michael's wife.

Ethan's mother.

“She knew too much,” Michael said.

Ethan swallowed.

“What did she know?”

“That Victor was stealing from the company.”

“How much?”

Michael hesitated.

“More than forty million dollars.”

Ethan stared.

“He stole forty million?”

“Over several years.”

Michael explained that Ethan's mother discovered hidden accounts.

She collected evidence.

She planned to expose Victor.

Then she died.

Ethan's voice became quiet.

“You said she got sick.”

Michael looked away.

“That is what I wanted you to believe.”

Ethan's anger returned.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“For twenty years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael's eyes filled with regret.

“Because the truth would have made you a target.”

Ethan turned away.

He could barely breathe.

Then Michael said something unexpected.

“Victor Hale wasn't working alone.”

Ethan looked back.

“Who was helping him?”

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he opened a drawer.

He removed a small envelope.

Inside was a list of names.

One name had been circled.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

His company's current chief financial officer.

Robert Mason.

Ethan's stomach tightened.

“Robert?”

Michael nodded.

“He is the reason I froze your investment.”

Ethan shook his head.

“He has worked for me for seven years.”

Michael replied quietly,

“Exactly.”

Ethan suddenly understood.

The $200 million was not punishment.

It was a trap.

Michael had frozen the investment because someone inside Ethan's company was preparing to steal it.

Ethan looked at the list again.

“How did you know?”

Michael pointed toward the antique watch.

“That watch belonged to your mother.”

Ethan touched it.

“She used it to hide evidence.”

“What evidence?”

May you like

Michael's expression hardened.

“The proof that Victor Hale is still alive.”
