THE CALL IN THE SNOW / Chapter 11 / 25

Chapter 11 - CAMILLE WAS IN THE COMPANY BEFORE SHE WAS IN THE MARRIAGECamille’s involvement began twenty-two months before divorce.

Officially:

external strategy consultant.

Damon said she was brilliant.

Tessa had no issue initially.

Camille attended dinners.

Once helped Ivy with toy at office.

She seemed kind.

That memory made snow-smile worse.

Then messages recovered.

Damon and Camille became emotionally intimate at least fourteen months before separation.

Hotel records later indicated physical relationship likely eleven months before.

Damon publicly claimed relationship began after marriage broke.

Lie.

Camille knew Tessa existed, obviously.

She also knew Stephen isolation.

Text:

Camille:

Does T know her father keeps emailing?

Damon:

No.

Camille:

That’s messed up.

Damon:

You don’t understand history.

Months later:

Camille:

Stephen requested financial package again.

Damon:

Route through me. Never Tessa.

Camille complied.

Her moral line shifted.

Affair likely made incentive.

Then she formed CMB Strategic Advisory while still consultant.

Damon funneled payments.

$900k problematic.

Camille’s counsel argued legitimate compensation, but false authorizations.

She might not know Tessa framed at moment transfers.

Then later texts:

Camille:

Why is Tessa’s name on approvals?

Damon:

Settlement mechanics.

Camille:

I don’t want this coming back.

Damon:

It won’t.

She knew something off.

After theft accusation:

Camille:

You told board she took it?

Damon:

It’s cleanest explanation.

Camille:

Jesus.

Damon:

Do you want her dragging us through affair and payments?

Camille:

No.

There.

She knew then.

Didn’t correct.

Then divorce.

Camille played supportive acquaintance to Tessa once.

“I’m sorry.”

She knew.

Tessa felt sick.

At snow night Camille said:

“Maybe your rich family can save you.”

She knew father wasn't actually rejecting? Text suggests Damon told her he was blocking.

So taunt deliberate.

Tessa’s anger at Camille sharpened.

But investigation showed Camille sometimes objected.

Not mastermind.

Complicit.

Then affair.

Tessa confronted memory:

She thought Damon left because marriage failed.

Actually both:

marriage had problems, and affair.

Tessa refused rewrite as perfect wife.

She and Damon fought about work, money, his absence, her withdrawal.

But affair was choice.

Frame was choice.

She told therapist Dr. Naomi Keller:

“I keep wanting one explanation.”

“Maybe there are several.”

“Did he stop loving me?”

“Did he want company?”

“Did he want Camille?”

“Did he hate my father?”

Naomi:

“Knowing motive may not give closure.”

Tessa hated that but true.

Then Camille requested confidential settlement with Tessa:

return certain funds, statement not pursue civil claims.

Rachel:

“Too early.”

Tessa:

“No.”

Not revenge.

Need truth.

Camille’s lawyer warned:

“She is prepared to say Damon directed all financial decisions.”

Cracks.

Damon heard.

He began blaming Camille.

Public/private:

“Consultant abused access.”

Camille realized.

This sets chap21.

Meanwhile Gloria defended Camille oddly.

“She is loyal.”

Because second wife gave promise of grandson? They had no child yet maybe trying. Gloria adored idea.

She told society friend:

“Camille understands legacy.”

Legacy = son.

Ivy excluded.

Tessa overheard from statement.

She sought family court order prohibiting derogatory gender comments around Ivy.

Court/parenting coordinator took seriously.

Gloria contact limited.

Damon argued mother harmless.

But snow audio? Exterior camera maybe no audio. Maria heard.

Tessa’s testimony.

At temporary hearing, judge said:

“A three-year-old child is not lesser because female.”

Obvious.

Gloria humiliated.

Good.

Camille’s company was source.

The second wife wasn’t new.
