Chapter 17 - WHY GLORIA NEEDED A GRANDSONGloria’s fixation had another source: fear.

She had spent adult life depending on Damon.
Her husband left modest estate, not Whitaker empire.
Damon’s success funded:
her condo before mansion,
travel,
staff,
charities,
social status.
If Damon’s control weakened, Gloria’s lifestyle uncertain.
She equated male heir with permanence.
A grandson bearing Whitaker name would keep dynasty beyond Damon.
Camille encouraged initially.
She told Gloria:
“When we have boy, everything settles.”
Camille later admitted it was flattery.
She knew Gloria wanted.
Tessa had once endured fertility pressure.
After Ivy born, Gloria asked within weeks:
“When trying for boy?”
Tessa had difficult delivery.
Damon told mother stop once.
But months later he also said:
“Maybe second.”
Tessa wasn’t ready.
Then marriage stress.
No second child.
Gloria blamed.
When affair/Camille emerged, Gloria quickly accepted because Camille promised future.
“Fresh start.”
Cruel.
Damon did not explicitly choose wife for son production, but allowed narrative because convenient.
Then board/inheritance misconceptions.
Gloria believed founder shares eventually to Damon son.
Damon’s estate plan at one point did leave controlling founder voting shares to “children,” no sex preference. So even his legal docs contradicted mother.
But he had discussed establishing legacy vehicle if son.
Ambiguous.
Gloria took fantasy.
Why matters?
It drove hostility to Ivy/Tessa but not financial conspiracy core.
Tessa did not want over-credit ideology for crime.
She said:
“Gloria disliked me long before money accusation.”
“She used son issue because she knew it hurt.”
Yes.
Then supervised contact report:
Gloria repeatedly tried make Ivy choose Daddy’s house.
Court suspended for six weeks pending counseling.
Gloria finally entered family therapy.
Therapist challenged:
“What would change if Ivy were boy?”
Gloria:
“Nothing.”
“Then why mention?”
She cried eventually:
“Because I was raised that women marry out.”
“But Tessa’s family wealth came through woman.”
Silence.
Eleanor.
Irony.
Gloria’s entire home benefited maternal trust.
Yet she devalued girls.
When mansion ownership became public in court, Gloria humiliated.
Not because poor.
Because story false.
She told Damon:
“Your father would be ashamed.”
Damon:
“Dad didn’t build company.”
“Neither did Stephen.”
“Both helped.”
He finally acknowledged.
Gloria couldn’t.
Her identity required exceptional son.
If help existed, still successful, but not myth.
She had used myth to justify cruelty.
Then she learned Damon’s business debts/recap.
He wasn’t invincible.
Gloria panicked.
She blamed Tessa:
“You brought your father to take everything.”
Tessa answered once through mediator:
“I made one phone call because my daughter was standing in snow.”
“Everything after came from records your son created.”
Perfect.
No power war.
Consequences triggered evidence.
Gloria never fully accepted at first.
But later, after Damon plea? We'll see.
She eventually apologized not only gender but throwing out.
At sentencing? Gloria may face no major criminal financial charges if not involved transfers? She helped letters and eviction. Civil/coercion, obstruction maybe. Could face lesser consequences, per outline "also consequences". We can make she is not convicted of financial fraud but found liable in civil emotional interference/participation, loses contact, pays costs, possible misdemeanor child endangerment? She was active throwing child out and hiding mail. Keep legal modest.
Gloria’s biggest punishment:
relationship with Ivy fractured,
status story exposed,
house lost,
son convicted,
social respect damaged.
Tessa did not need prison for Gloria.
She wanted boundary.
The grandson obsession eventually looked small against reality:
May you like
Ivy was the descendant protected most clearly.
And the three-year-old Gloria put in snow became one person the Calder trust was specifically designed to shelter.
