Chapter 9 - DAMON HAD BEEN SPEAKING FOR BOTH SIDESDamon Whitaker’s genius was translation.

He told each person what other “really meant.”
Stephen’s questions:
“Your father is trying control us.”
Tessa’s concerns:
“She’s emotional because pregnancy.”
Gloria’s cruelty:
“My mother is old-fashioned, don’t take personally.”
Board concerns:
“Tessa’s family wants takeover.”
Tessa’s silence:
“She doesn’t want contact.”
He stood center.
For years, everyone talked through Damon.
That gave power.
Rachel mapped communications.
Almost every major break involved intermediary.
Stephen → Damon → Tessa.
Tessa → Damon → Stephen.
Board → Damon → family.
Divorce counsel selected via Damon.
Gloria reinforcing.
Camille later.
Then theft.
Damon called board emergency.
He said Tessa discovered using credentials.
Did he immediately contact police?
No.
Interesting.
If $900k stolen, why not criminal complaint?
He said family wanted handle privately.
Instead used accusation in divorce negotiation.
Rachel:
“That suggests leverage.”
Not proof innocence, but motive.
Tessa signed settlement giving up certain claims and agreed not disparage company.
Then Damon never pursued criminal charges.
Why?
Maybe avoided scrutiny.
Exactly.
If police examined transfer metadata, frame might unravel.
So threat enough.
Board believed internal matter.
One board member Harold Wren now regretted.
He told Calder investigator:
“Damon said Tessa admitted.”
She never.
“Who heard?”
“Gloria.”
Tessa stared.
Gloria claimed confession.
What exactly?
During argument, Tessa said:
“I don’t care about your damn money.”
Gloria later transformed into:
“Tessa said she took it because money meant nothing.”
Absurd.
Harold never verified.
Another member Julia Kent asked speak Tessa directly.
Damon:
“My lawyer advises no.”
Board accepted.
Gatekeeping.
Then Damon told Tessa board unanimously blamed.
Not true.
Minutes:
questions.
Julia requested forensic audit.
Damon postponed due “divorce privilege/security.”
Now Julia cooperated.
“I should have pushed.”
Tessa:
“Yes.”
No soothing.
People failed.
Julia accepted.
Then Damon’s chief of staff Aaron Bell (new name maybe) admitted he was instructed filter Calder communications.
He thought legal conflict.
Damon:
“Nothing from Stephen reaches Tessa without me.”
Why?
“Harassment.”
Aaron complied.
Later felt wrong.
He retained old Slack.
One message:
If my wife speaks to her father before recap, we lose leverage.
There.
Financial reason.
What recap?
An earlier share restructuring.
Damon needed Tessa sign spousal/family consents without Stephen advice.
She signed because Damon said routine.
Some may be challengeable.
This expanded.
Then Damon spoke to Camille too.
Texts after separation:
Damon:
She still thinks Stephen hates her. Keep it that way.
Camille:
I don’t like being in middle.
Damon:
You want this over? Then help.
Camille later did.
This becomes later cooperation.
Tessa’s anger focused Damon now.
But Rachel warned:
“Do not assume every wrong equals prosecutable.”
We have enough.
Emotionally.
Tessa requested direct conversation with Damon through attorneys? Maybe not yet.
He wanted speak.
She refused until forensic.
Good.
Ivy saw father under parenting schedule? Important. Damon is Ivy’s father. After snow incident, custody issues. He had allowed/ordered her thrown out? Need address. Tessa can't unilaterally block forever. Emergency family court temporary order due exposure event. Damon wasn’t there, but knew? Evidence later. For now Tessa sought emergency temporary custody; court ordered supervised or daytime contact pending. Damon claimed had no knowledge.
Ivy asked Daddy.
Tessa did not poison.
“Daddy loves you.”
Was that okay if uncertain? She said:
“Daddy will see you when grown-ups work things out.”
No false.
Damon video called supervised.
He looked shaken.
“Ivy, sweetheart.”
Ivy:
“Grandma made us go snow.”
Damon froze.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why didn’t you come?”
His eyes moved.
“I was away.”
“Mommy cried.”
Damon swallowed.
Tessa watched.
Part of her saw father who loved daughter.
Part saw man who might knowingly allow.
Complex.
After call Damon sent Tessa:
We need talk without your father poisoning this.
There again.
Intermediary framing.
Tessa replied through Rachel only:
Speak through counsel.
May you like
First time Damon could not translate her to anyone.
She spoke for herself.
