Chapter 13 - “SHE’LL TAKE IVY AND GO”Damon believed Tessa would disappear quietly.

Evidence came from conversation with Camille one week before snow night.
Once furnace fixed, push her out. She’ll take Ivy and go.
Camille:
Where?
Damon:
She always lands somewhere.
Camille:
Her father?
Damon:
She won’t call him.
Camille:
How sure?
Damon:
Four years sure.
Tessa stared.
He counted isolation as certainty.
Then:
Leave enough in joint card for hotel.
Camille:
Gloria canceled it yesterday.
Damon:
Of course she did. I’ll fix later.
He didn’t.
Tessa had tried card after leaving? Marcus came quickly, so maybe no.
They intended minimal.
But Damon’s assumption:
pride keeps quiet.
For years, Tessa had been trained:
Don’t bother Stephen.
Don’t involve Calder.
Don’t create scandal.
Protect Ivy from conflict.
Accept divorce.
Don’t challenge company or criminal exposure.
Silence beneficial.
Snow night was designed final push:
remove physical access.
humiliate.
make her leave state perhaps.
Why want her out of Wisconsin?
Recapitalization and custody.
If Tessa moved voluntarily with Ivy? Damon could frame abandonment? But custody complications. He expected she might go Colorado/California? Stephen in Chicago? Calder family maybe Illinois.
Texts:
If she relocates, custody gets cleaner.
Damon to lawyer? This is alarming. Attorney privileged not accessible unless crime-fraud; don't use. Instead to Camille.
Camille:
Wouldn’t you lose Ivy?
Damon:
Temporarily. She won’t manage alone. She’ll come back on terms.
Control.
He underestimated Tessa mother strength.
Tessa told Rachel:
“I almost did.”
After snow, before calling father, she considered driving south? No car.
If she hadn't called, hotel? Friends ghosted. Maybe shelter. She might relocate.
Damon knew resources limited because unfavorable settlement.
He used financial dependency.
Then Stephen asked:
“Why didn’t you come to me when divorce?”
“I thought you would say I told you so.”
Stephen winced.
“I might have thought it.”
“I hope I wouldn’t say.”
Honest.
Damon knew pride.
Camille later admitted:
Damon repeatedly said Tessa’s worst fear was proving father right.
So she’d avoid him.
Psychological map.
The call broke.
Tessa made biggest humiliating admission:
“Dad, I need help.”
And Stephen didn’t gloat.
That mattered.
Then family court hearing over temporary relocation/parenting.
Damon accused Stephen of buying Tessa expensive hotel, lawyers, using wealth.
Judge asked Tessa:
“Do you intend relocate?”
“No.”
“I intend stay near Ivy’s school until permanent arrangements.”
Good.
She rented modest furnished townhouse through own funds? Her accounts limited but Stephen loan? She wanted independence. Divorce support plus family trust distributions she learned existed. She accepted trust income legally hers.
Not father charity.
She moved.
Ivy got room.
Stephen visited.
No mansion.
She liked.
Tessa began rebuilding credit/finance.
Damon had handled all.
Rachel insisted independent planner.
No repeating.
Then Damon sent:
You’re letting your father control you again.
Tessa almost laughed.
She forwarded to Rachel.
No reply.
He lost channel.
Meanwhile special committee suspended Damon from certain executive functions pending investigation.
Not removed yet.
He blamed Tessa.
She hadn’t voted; Calder entities exercised rights.
She refused join board discussions due conflict.
Stephen proud.
“I thought you’d want seat.”
“No.”
“I want process independent.”
She learned.
Then Camille reached out secretly:
Damon is going to destroy all of us.
Rachel preserved.
No response direct.
Why?
Camille could cooperate through counsel.
Cracks bigger.
Tessa realized:
Damon believed everyone acted from shame/fear like he did.
Tessa fear of father.
Camille fear losing him.
Gloria fear family decline.
Board fear Calder takeover.
He managed those.
But once one person stopped—
system changed.
Tessa called.
Then Stephen asked questions.
Board investigated.
Camille reconsidered.
Gloria lost control.
All from one phone call.
May you like
Not because father magical.
Because isolation ended.
