Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT DAMON CHOSE HIS NEW LIFEThe most painful evidence was a text.

Sent at 7:12 p.m. on snow night.
From Camille to Damon:
She won’t leave. Gloria is losing it.
Damon:
Do it tonight. I don’t want her there when I get back.
Camille:
Ivy is with her.
Three minutes.
Damon:
Then make sure Ivy has coat.
Tessa read.
No one spoke.
Rachel watched.
Stephen stood by window.
Tessa’s face went blank.
“Again.”
Rachel hesitated.
Tessa:
“Read again.”
She did.
Then another.
Camille:
It’s snowing hard.
Damon:
Marcus at neighboring property? Wait Marcus was Stephen driver, not Damon. Don't. Damon: She can get hotel.
Camille:
She doesn’t have car.
Damon:
Call a ride after she leaves.
Did they?
No.
Gloria refused.
Camille threw bags.
No ride called.
Damon knew.
He wasn’t physically there, but instructed removal.
Why that night?
Tessa had come to mansion to retrieve remaining belongings? We need establish. She perhaps still had temporary access after divorce, some possessions. Gloria invited under pretense to discuss Ivy holiday. Then accusation fight. Damon away.
Actually script says she is thrown out of mansion with suitcase; likely staying there? Maybe after divorce, why living? Could be she and Ivy were staying temporarily due house transfer? Let's clarify: After divorce, court allowed Tessa 30 days to collect belongings and she temporarily stayed guest wing with Ivy over holiday due apartment lease issue/parenting exchange. Gloria/Camille used chance. But Camille is second wife already; would Tessa live there? Weird.
Alternative: Tessa came for Ivy's scheduled overnight/holiday gathering, storm worsened, Gloria refused. Suitcase was for Ivy/Tessa overnight because Damon asked them to stay due snow. Then they were expelled after argument. Script says thrown out, so okay. Let's say Damon had asked Tessa/Ivy to stay at mansion for three nights during holiday because apartment heating repairs and co-parenting. Camille disliked. That night he told remove. Makes more betrayal.
Tessa’s apartment furnace failed during cold snap.
Damon offered:
“Stay guest wing until fixed. Ivy shouldn’t be hotel.”
Tessa reluctantly accepted.
He was traveling Chicago two nights.
Then Gloria accused theft again, argument, suitcases.
So Damon knowingly reversed shelter.
Text:
She can go hotel.
But had car reclaimed by Damon legal because company vehicle.
Why?
Vehicle title company, removed.
He knew.
And Ivy three.
Tessa whispered:
“He told them.”
Stephen nodded.
This shifted family court.
Damon had claimed no knowledge.
Under oath at emergency hearing he said:
“I learned after.”
Now false statement.
Consequences.
His attorney withdrew? Maybe advised correction.
Damon amended testimony.
Said he meant ask Tessa leave next morning, not throw into snow.
Text wording.
Camille responded:
Gloria wants her gone now.
Damon:
Fine. Tonight.
Hard.
Then:
Don’t make scene.
Irony.
Gloria did.
Tessa's call happened.
Damon chose new life:
Camille, Gloria, control, no Tessa in house.
But also believed she had nowhere to go because isolated.
His text later to Camille after she reported Tessa calling someone:
Who?
Camille:
Her father.
Then no reply for six minutes.
Finally:
Shit.
That one word.
He knew danger.
Not because Stephen violent/powerful cartoon.
Because Stephen had records.
Rights.
Questions.
Damon immediately called CFO at 11:58 p.m.
“What’s status Calder preferred consent?”
Why on snow night?
Because Tessa reconnecting threatened corporate scheme.
This connected personal eviction and financial.
Tessa read.
“He wasn’t worried she called Dad because of family.”
Rachel:
“He was worried corporate.”
Maybe both.
Then Damon emailed attorney midnight:
Need accelerate recap before Calder coordinates with Tessa.
There.
Snow call changed business timeline.
The next morning he publicly called Tessa unstable? Internal memo.
She called father, so hostile takeover.
He reframed again.
But texts preserved.
Then Tessa watched footage from mansion entrance.
No audio but body language.
Camille toss suitcase.
Ivy.
Gloria.
Phone.
Car arriving.
She stopped when Ivy's pink sweater fell.
“That was her favorite.”
Rachel:
“We can stop.”
“No.”
She watched herself pick it.
Then call.
This was evidence.
Damon chose new life over safety that night.
Not by absence.
By text.
Tessa could no longer tell Ivy someday:
Daddy didn’t know.
She would need age-appropriate truth.
Not now.
Three.
For now:
“Adults made bad decisions.”
Damon’s visitation became supervised temporarily after court saw text, not because he physically harmed, but judgment and dishonesty.
He protested.
Judge:
“You instructed removal of a three-year-old during severe weather while knowing transportation uncertain.”
Strong.
Damon cried in court maybe.
“I didn’t mean put her danger.”
Intent not necessary for concern.
He had prioritized getting Tessa out.
Consequences.
Tessa didn’t celebrate.
Ivy loved father.
Every consequence touched child.
That was what made Damon’s choices selfish.
