## Chapter 2 — The White Powder on the Hospital Floor

The low growl echoed through the otherwise quiet hospital corridor.

Every nurse turned instinctively toward Cooper.

The Golden Retriever's posture had completely changed.

His ears stood rigid.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

His normally gentle eyes were fixed on a single place.

Room 812.

Michael had owned Cooper since the dog was eight weeks old.

In eleven years...

He had never seen him react like this.

"Cooper..."

Michael called calmly.

The dog didn't even look back.

Andrew frowned.

"Something's wrong."

Before either brother could react...

Cooper exploded forward.

His powerful paws pounded against the polished hallway floor as he sprinted toward Eleanor's room.

"Cooper!"

Andrew shouted.

The dog ignored him.

---

Inside the room...

Claire slowly lifted another spoonful of porridge.

"Come on, Mother."

Her voice was sweet enough to fool anyone.

"Just one bite."

Eleanor stared helplessly at the spoon approaching her lips.

Her breathing became uneven.

The heart monitor accelerated again.

Claire leaned closer.

"No one can save you now."

The spoon was only inches away...

When—

BANG!

The hospital room door burst open.

Cooper charged inside like a missile.

Claire gasped.

"What—"

She never finished the sentence.

The Golden Retriever slammed into her side with enough force to knock her backward.

The bowl flew from her hands.

Porridge splashed across the white marble floor.

The ceramic bowl shattered into dozens of pieces.

Silence.

For half a second...

No one moved.

---

Claire lay on the floor in complete shock.

The spoon rolled beneath the hospital bed.

Steam rose from the spilled porridge.

Cooper immediately positioned himself between Claire and Eleanor.

His body blocked the hospital bed completely.

The dog lowered his head.

His lips curled back.

A deep warning growl filled the room.

Not once...

Not twice...

But continuously.

Michael froze.

"Cooper..."

The dog had never growled at a family member before.

Never.

---

Andrew hurried toward his mother.

"Mom!"

Eleanor's eyes overflowed with tears.

She looked at Cooper.

Then at the spilled porridge.

Then back at her sons.

Her trembling fingers struggled to point toward the floor.

Claire quickly stood up.

Her elegant dress was stained with porridge.

She forced an embarrassed laugh.

"Oh my goodness."

"I don't know what got into him."

"He must have been startled."

She took one careful step toward the bed.

Immediately...

Cooper barked.

A loud...

Explosive bark that echoed throughout the entire VIP wing.

Claire instinctively stepped backward.

The dog never took his eyes off her.

---

Within seconds...

Two nurses rushed into the room.

"What happened?"

Michael looked just as confused.

"We don't know."

"Cooper suddenly attacked the bowl."

Claire quickly wiped tears from her eyes.

"I've never seen him behave like this."

She looked genuinely frightened.

"I was only trying to feed Mother."

One nurse bent down to comfort Cooper.

The Golden Retriever ignored her.

His attention remained locked on Claire.

The nurse looked puzzled.

"This isn't like him."

"No."

Michael answered quietly.

"It isn't."

---

Andrew knelt beside the broken bowl.

He began picking up the larger ceramic pieces to prevent anyone from stepping on them.

As he reached beneath the hospital bed...

His fingers brushed against something soft.

Not ceramic.

Not metal.

Paper.

He pulled it out.

A tiny white packet.

About the size of a packet of artificial sweetener.

It had already been torn open.

A trace of fine white powder still clung to one corner.

Andrew stared at it.

"What is this?"

Claire's face instantly lost all color.

For less than a second...

Pure panic flashed across her eyes.

Then she recovered.

"I've never seen that before."

Andrew slowly stood.

Holding the packet between two fingers.

"It was under Mom's bed."

Claire forced herself to remain calm.

"Maybe it belongs to the cleaning staff."

No one answered.

---

Michael took the packet.

There were no labels.

No pharmacy markings.

No manufacturer.

Nothing.

Just plain white paper.

Folded by hand.

He looked at Claire.

"Have you seen this before?"

"No."

She answered too quickly.

"I have no idea where it came from."

Michael didn't respond.

Instead...

He crouched beside Cooper.

The Golden Retriever slowly sniffed the packet.

Instantly...

He began barking again.

Louder than before.

Then he turned toward Claire.

Growling.

Every nurse in the room exchanged uneasy glances.

Animals could make mistakes.

But Cooper wasn't acting confused.

He was acting certain.

---

Dr. Samuel Harris entered moments later after hearing the commotion.

"What happened here?"

One nurse explained everything.

The broken bowl.

The dog.

The mysterious packet.

Dr. Harris accepted the packet carefully.

Without touching the remaining powder.

His expression became serious.

"I don't recognize this."

Michael asked quietly,

"Can the hospital test it?"

"Yes."

The doctor nodded.

"But I'll have to send it to the toxicology laboratory."

"How long?"

"Several hours."

Michael looked toward Claire.

She stood perfectly still.

Hands clasped together.

Trying desperately to appear calm.

---

Eleanor suddenly reached for Michael's sleeve.

With enormous effort...

She squeezed his wrist.

Then looked toward the broken porridge on the floor.

Her eyes pleaded with him.

Michael understood.

For the first time...

He realized his mother wasn't afraid because of her illness.

She had been afraid...

Of the food.

---

Dr. Harris called another nurse.

"Collect every bit of the spilled porridge."

"Seal the bowl."

"Seal the spoon."

"And send everything to the lab."

Claire's heartbeat pounded in her ears.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

The powder should already be inside Eleanor.

Not inside a laboratory.

She quietly reached for her handbag.

No one noticed.

Slowly...

She slipped her phone into her hand beneath the folds of her dress.

Without looking down...

She typed three short words.

**It went wrong.**

She pressed send.

Almost immediately...

Her phone vibrated.

A reply arrived.

Only one sentence.

**Leave the hospital now.**

Claire slowly raised her eyes.

Directly across the room...

Cooper was already watching her.

The Golden Retriever's growl became deeper.

As though he somehow knew...

She wasn't planning to stay.
