Chapter 7 — The Truth Behind Claire's Marriage

# The Loyal Witness
## Chapter 7 — Cooper Exposes the Mastermind
The emergency lights cast long red shadows across the toxicology laboratory.
Rebecca Sloan's hands tightened around the sealed evidence envelope.
The unknown figure stood silently in the doorway.
His face remained hidden in the darkness.
Only his voice was calm.
"Please..."
"Hand me the report."
Rebecca slowly stepped backward.
"I'm calling security."
The man smiled.
"I wouldn't."
He quietly locked the laboratory door.
Click.
The sound echoed through the room.
Rebecca's heartbeat accelerated.
---
At that same moment...
Michael and Andrew stepped out of the elevator on the eighth floor.
Hospital security officers surrounded the corridor.
One officer ran toward them.
"The laboratory just lost power."
Michael immediately looked toward the stairwell.
"How long ago?"
"Less than thirty seconds."
Without another word...
The two brothers sprinted toward the laboratory.
Cooper raced beside them.
---
Inside the laboratory...
Rebecca carefully placed the evidence envelope behind her.
"You won't leave here with it."
The man slowly removed his gloves.
He revealed a silver pistol fitted with a suppressor.
"I wasn't asking."
Rebecca froze.
She had spent twenty-two years working in forensic science.
Never once had anyone threatened her inside a hospital.
---
Outside...
Cooper suddenly stopped.
His ears lifted.
His nose twitched rapidly.
Instead of following Michael toward the laboratory...
The Golden Retriever turned sharply toward a nearby maintenance corridor.
Andrew shouted,
"Cooper!"
The dog ignored him.
He sprinted away.
Michael hesitated.
Something about Cooper's behavior felt familiar.
Every time the dog had ignored a command...
He had led them closer to the truth.
"Follow him!"
Michael ordered.
---
Cooper raced into a restricted service hallway rarely used by visitors.
At the far end...
A maintenance elevator was slowly closing.
Inside stood a familiar face.
Daniel Mercer.
Still wearing the same dark jacket.
Still carrying the black medical supply bag.
Daniel saw Cooper.
His expression instantly changed.
He slammed the emergency close button.
The elevator doors began shutting.
"Stop him!"
Andrew shouted.
Cooper lunged forward.
Just before the doors closed...
The Golden Retriever forced his head between them.
The safety sensors immediately reopened the elevator.
Daniel tried to push Cooper away.
The dog refused to move.
Instead...
He clamped firmly onto Daniel's jacket sleeve.
Not biting flesh.
Only the fabric.
Holding him in place.
Daniel panicked.
"Get this dog off me!"
Michael reached the elevator seconds later.
"Police!"
Daniel shoved Michael violently.
Then bolted into the underground service tunnels beneath the hospital.
---
The chase lasted less than two minutes.
Daniel knew the tunnels.
But Cooper followed his scent effortlessly.
Every turn...
Every hallway...
Every staircase...
The Golden Retriever never hesitated.
Finally...
Daniel reached a locked emergency exit.
He pulled desperately at the handle.
It wouldn't open.
Behind him...
Cooper growled.
Daniel slowly turned around.
The dog stood between him and every possible escape.
Seconds later...
Michael and hospital security surrounded him.
Daniel quietly raised his hands.
"It's over."
---
Daniel was handcuffed without resistance.
Michael immediately searched the black medical supply bag.
Inside were several sealed medication vials.
Forged hospital identification cards.
Disposable gloves.
A burner phone.
And...
Three more packets of the same white powder.
Andrew stared at the evidence.
"My God..."
"You planned to come back."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I wasn't finished."
---
Back upstairs...
Rebecca handed Michael the fingerprint report.
"You arrived just in time."
Michael looked at Daniel.
"Who hired you?"
Daniel remained silent.
Andrew stepped forward.
"Claire?"
No response.
Michael asked again.
"Was it Claire?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
Michael frowned.
"Then who?"
Daniel looked directly into Michael's eyes.
His expression carried something unexpected.
Not hatred.
Fear.
"You don't understand."
"If I tell you..."
"He'll kill all of us."
The hallway fell silent.
Michael's voice became steady.
"Who is 'he'?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
For several long seconds...
No one spoke.
Finally...
He whispered two words.
**"Arthur Whitmore."**
Andrew's face went completely blank.
Michael stared at Daniel in disbelief.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Arthur Whitmore.
Their father.
The man everyone believed had died in a private plane crash...
Twelve years earlier.
Daniel slowly nodded.
"He never died."
"He planned everything."
"The poisoning..."
"Claire..."
"Even me."
Michael felt the world tilt beneath his feet.
His father...
Had been alive all these years.
And according to Daniel...
Everything that had happened to Eleanor...
Had been ordered by him.
Just then...
Michael's phone rang.
It was the intensive care unit.
He answered immediately.
Dr. Harris's frightened voice came through the speaker.
"Michael..."
"Someone just entered your mother's hospital room..."
"...and Cooper isn't there anymore."
