Chapter 5 — Cooper Leads Michael to a Hidden Secret

# The Loyal Witness
## Chapter 5 — The Family Lawyer Reveals Eleanor's New Will
Claire disappeared without a trace.
By the time hospital security reached the underground parking garage...
The black SUV was gone.
No witnesses.
No usable fingerprints.
Only an empty parking space remained.
Michael stared at the surveillance monitor.
"Lock down every exit."
The security supervisor sighed.
"We already have."
"But they're long gone."
---
Andrew slammed his fist against the wall.
"She poisoned Mom."
"She ran."
"What more proof do we need?"
Michael remained unusually calm.
"Proof is one thing."
"A conviction is another."
He knew Claire well.
Too well.
She never acted without a backup plan.
Someone had organized everything.
The poisoned porridge.
The anonymous messages.
The masked driver.
None of it felt random.
Someone else was still pulling the strings.
---
Meanwhile...
Inside Room 812...
Eleanor slowly opened her eyes.
Cooper lay quietly beside her bed.
The Golden Retriever refused to leave.
Even the nurses noticed.
"He hasn't eaten."
"He won't leave her."
One nurse whispered.
Eleanor reached down with trembling fingers.
Cooper gently rested his head against her hand.
For the first time in days...
She smiled.
Very faintly.
As though she knew her most loyal guardian had saved her life.
---
That evening...
Michael received an unexpected phone call.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
"This is David Morrison."
Michael immediately recognized the name.
David Morrison had served as the Whitmore family's attorney for nearly thirty years.
"I need both you and Andrew."
"Tonight."
"It's about your mother's instructions."
Michael frowned.
"What instructions?"
"They were to be carried out only if someone attempted to harm Eleanor."
Silence.
Michael slowly answered,
"We're coming."
---
Less than an hour later...
The two brothers entered Morrison Legal Associates.
The elderly attorney was already waiting inside a private conference room.
A thick sealed envelope rested on the table.
Across the front...
Eleanor's handwriting appeared.
**To be opened only if my life is ever deliberately threatened.**
Andrew looked at his brother.
Neither of them spoke.
David carefully broke the wax seal.
"There are two documents."
"The first..."
He unfolded several pages.
"...is your mother's updated Last Will and Testament."
Michael looked surprised.
"Updated?"
David nodded.
"She signed it four months ago."
Andrew leaned forward.
"What changed?"
The attorney adjusted his glasses.
"Everything."
---
He began reading.
The Whitmore family estate...
Worth nearly one hundred million dollars...
Would no longer pass equally to the family.
Instead...
Most of Eleanor's fortune would establish a charitable foundation for abandoned animals...
Senior citizens...
And hospitals providing long-term stroke rehabilitation.
Michael received only the family home.
Andrew inherited Eleanor's investment company.
Several longtime employees received generous trust funds.
Claire...
Received absolutely nothing.
Andrew blinked.
"Nothing?"
David slowly shook his head.
"Not one dollar."
Michael frowned.
"Did Claire know?"
David answered quietly.
"No."
"Eleanor specifically instructed me not to inform anyone."
The room fell silent.
Michael suddenly understood.
If Claire had believed Eleanor's previous will remained unchanged...
She would have expected to inherit millions after Eleanor's death.
But the new will destroyed that possibility.
---
David opened the second envelope.
"This..."
"...is more troubling."
Inside was another handwritten letter from Eleanor.
It had been signed the same day as the will.
David began reading aloud.
> If anything happens to me...
>
> It was not an accident.
>
> I have spent the last year pretending I trust Claire.
>
> I know she has been searching my office...
> my bedroom...
> and my personal safe.
>
> She believes I possess something worth killing for.
>
> She is wrong.
>
> I no longer have it.
Andrew slowly looked up.
"What doesn't she have?"
David lowered the letter.
"I don't know."
Michael asked quietly,
"Did my mother ever tell you?"
David hesitated.
Then nodded once.
"Only this..."
"She said..."
"...if Claire ever became desperate..."
"...she would not be acting alone."
---
Michael felt a chill run through his body.
Exactly what the anonymous note had warned.
Claire had help.
---
David reached beneath the conference table.
He removed a small locked metal box.
"Eleanor instructed me to give this to you..."
"...only after reading the letter."
Michael accepted the box.
A tiny brass key rested beside it.
Inside...
There were no jewels.
No cash.
No legal documents.
Only an old leather dog collar.
Andrew frowned.
"Cooper's?"
David smiled softly.
"No."
"This belonged to Cooper's father."
Both brothers looked confused.
Attached to the collar...
Was a small silver tag.
On the back...
Someone had engraved a single sentence.
**He always knows who is lying.**
Michael stared at the collar.
"What does this mean?"
David leaned back in his chair.
"Eleanor always believed that bloodhounds follow scents..."
"But Golden Retrievers follow people."
Andrew looked puzzled.
"I don't understand."
David folded his hands.
"Years ago..."
"Cooper's father exposed an employee who had been stealing from your family's company."
"The police couldn't prove anything."
"But the dog refused to leave that man's side."
"Three days later..."
"The man confessed."
Michael looked toward the collar again.
Eleanor hadn't kept it as a memory.
She had kept it as a reminder.
Trust Cooper.
Always.
---
Just then...
Michael's phone vibrated.
It was Dr. Harris.
His voice sounded urgent.
"Michael..."
"You need to return to the hospital immediately."
"What happened?"
"The toxicology department finished examining the powder."
Michael frowned.
"I thought they already identified it."
"They did."
"But they found something else."
"What?"
A long pause followed.
Then Dr. Harris quietly said,
"The fingerprints on the packet..."
"...don't belong to Claire."
Michael slowly lowered the phone.
Andrew stared at him.
"What is it?"
Michael looked directly at his brother.
"They've identified another person."
"And according to the lab..."
"...that person has been inside Mom's hospital room before."
