Chapter 4 — Claire's Carefully Crafted Lies

# The Loyal Witness

## Chapter 4 — Cooper Leads Michael to a Hidden Secret

Cooper burst through the hospital's automatic doors like an arrow released from a bow.

His nose stayed low to the ground.

Ignoring the voices calling behind him.

Ignoring the traffic in the parking lot.

He followed a scent only he could recognize.

"Cooper!"

Michael shouted.

The Golden Retriever never slowed.

Andrew sprinted beside his brother.

"He's tracking someone!"

---

Patients and visitors stepped aside as Cooper raced across the hospital entrance.

Several security guards instinctively moved to intercept him.

"Stop that dog!"

One of them yelled.

Michael immediately held up his hand.

"Don't touch him!"

"He's trained."

"Just let him run."

The guards hesitated.

Then stepped aside.

---

Halfway across the parking lot...

Cooper suddenly stopped beside a black SUV.

The engine was already running.

Its heavily tinted windows concealed whoever sat inside.

The dog began barking furiously.

Not random barking.

Deliberate.

Persistent.

Demanding.

Michael immediately memorized the license plate.

Before he could approach...

The SUV accelerated.

Its tires screeched across the pavement.

"Stop!"

Andrew shouted.

The vehicle shot toward the exit.

Cooper chased it for several yards before finally stopping.

Standing motionless.

Still barking.

---

Michael pulled out his phone.

"Hospital security."

"This is Michael Whitmore."

"I need every security camera covering the parking lot."

"Immediately."

---

Within minutes...

Michael, Andrew and the head of hospital security sat inside the surveillance control room.

Dozens of monitors displayed live and recorded footage from every corner of the property.

The supervisor rewound the recording.

"There."

The black SUV appeared.

It had arrived almost two hours earlier.

Instead of parking near the visitor entrance...

It stopped where Room 812 was clearly visible through the hospital windows.

Andrew frowned.

"They've been watching Mom."

The supervisor continued playing the footage.

For nearly two hours...

No one entered.

No one exited.

The SUV simply remained there.

Waiting.

---

Then...

At exactly 2:31 p.m.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He wore a dark baseball cap.

Large sunglasses.

A medical face mask.

His entire face was hidden.

He walked calmly toward the hospital entrance carrying a small insulated delivery bag.

Andrew leaned closer.

"Can you zoom in?"

The image enlarged.

The delivery bag had no company logo.

No hospital identification.

Nothing.

Just plain black fabric.

---

The next camera picked him up inside the lobby.

He walked confidently.

Never stopping.

Never asking for directions.

Almost as though...

He already knew the hospital perfectly.

Michael felt uneasy.

"He isn't lost."

"No."

The security supervisor agreed.

"He knew exactly where he was going."

---

The footage switched to the VIP elevator.

The man entered alone.

Camera after camera followed him.

Second floor.

Fourth floor.

Eighth floor.

Finally...

The hallway outside Room 812.

The timestamp read...

**2:42 p.m.**

The man paused outside Eleanor's room.

He looked both directions.

Then quietly slipped something beneath a decorative bench before walking away.

Andrew immediately pointed.

"Pause."

The supervisor froze the frame.

The object was barely visible.

Small.

White.

Folded.

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"A packet."

---

"Where did he go after that?"

The supervisor resumed playback.

The man calmly entered a nearby stairwell.

Another camera should have captured him exiting.

It didn't.

They checked every floor.

Nothing.

Every exit.

Nothing.

Every hallway.

Nothing.

The masked man had simply...

Disappeared.

The room fell silent.

---

Hospital security immediately searched beneath the decorative bench.

Exactly where the camera had shown.

A maintenance employee reached underneath.

"There is something."

He pulled out a folded envelope sealed with clear tape.

Michael accepted it carefully.

The outside contained only three handwritten words.

**For Michael Only.**

Andrew looked confused.

"You know who left it?"

Michael slowly shook his head.

"No."

He carefully opened the envelope.

Inside...

There was a flash drive.

And a single sheet of paper.

The note read:

> If Cooper hadn't stopped her today...
>
> Your mother would already be dead.
>
> Claire didn't act alone.
>
> Trust the dog.
>
> Not everyone wearing a hospital badge works for the hospital.

No signature.

No fingerprints.

Nothing.

---

Michael inserted the flash drive into one of the security office computers.

A single video file appeared.

The timestamp showed...

Yesterday afternoon.

Room 812.

The angle came from inside the hospital room.

Andrew frowned.

"There aren't any cameras inside patient rooms."

"There shouldn't be."

The supervisor answered quietly.

Michael clicked Play.

The video showed Eleanor sleeping peacefully.

Several minutes passed.

Then...

Claire entered carrying the same insulated food container.

She looked around the room.

Made certain no one was watching.

Then...

Reached into her handbag.

Pulled out a tiny white packet.

And poured its contents into the porridge.

The recording was perfectly clear.

No doubt.

No explanation.

No misunderstanding.

Every person in the security office stopped breathing.

Andrew whispered,

"My God..."

Michael slowly paused the video.

His hands trembled with controlled anger.

"This..."

"...is attempted murder."

Just then...

The security supervisor's phone rang.

He answered.

His face immediately changed.

"What?"

He stood abruptly.

"When?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

Looking directly at Michael.

"There has been another incident."

"What happened?"

The supervisor swallowed hard.

"Claire Whitmore..."

"...has disappeared."

At that exact moment...

In the underground parking garage...

Claire climbed into the back seat of the same black SUV.

The masked driver looked at her through the rearview mirror.

Without saying a word...

He handed her another small white packet.

Then quietly spoke.

"You've already failed once."

"You won't get a second chance."

May you like
