## Chapter 3 — The Lab Report That Changed Everything

Claire forced herself to remain calm.

She slipped her phone back into her handbag before anyone noticed.

The message had been delivered.

**It went wrong.**

Someone would know.

Someone would decide what happened next.

But first...

She had to leave the hospital.

---

Dr. Samuel Harris carefully sealed the torn white packet inside an evidence bag.

The spilled porridge was collected into sterile containers.

Even the broken ceramic bowl and spoon were packaged separately.

Michael watched every step.

"No one touches anything."

The doctor nodded.

"We'll test all of it."

Andrew looked at Claire.

"You don't mind waiting until the results come back, do you?"

Claire forced a smile.

"Of course not."

"If it helps clear up this misunderstanding..."

"I'll stay."

Her voice sounded perfectly composed.

Inside...

Her heart was pounding so violently she thought everyone could hear it.

---

Outside the room...

Cooper finally stopped barking.

But he refused to move.

Instead...

He lay directly across the doorway.

His eyes never left Claire.

Every time she shifted her weight...

His ears immediately lifted.

One nurse laughed nervously.

"I've worked here eight years."

"I've never seen a dog guard a hospital room."

Michael quietly answered,

"Neither have I."

---

An hour later...

The Whitmore brothers sat together in the family waiting lounge.

Neither spoke.

Andrew finally broke the silence.

"You believe Cooper."

Michael looked toward the hallway.

"I trust him."

"You think Claire did something?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He remembered the look on his mother's face.

The fear.

The tears.

The desperate attempt to point toward the bowl.

Then he remembered Cooper.

Not attacking Claire.

Protecting Eleanor.

Finally he said,

"I don't know what happened."

"But I know one thing."

"Cooper believed Mom was in danger."

"And Cooper has never been wrong."

---

Claire stood alone beside the hospital windows.

She dialed a number.

No answer.

She tried again.

Straight to voicemail.

Her breathing became uneven.

Where was he?

A text message suddenly appeared.

**Destroy anything that connects you to the powder.**

Claire immediately searched her handbag.

Nothing.

The packet was gone.

Andrew had found it.

She quietly closed her eyes.

Everything was unraveling.

---

Two floors below...

The toxicology laboratory received the evidence.

Senior forensic analyst Dr. Lisa Monroe opened the sealed containers.

She first tested the remaining powder inside the packet.

Then...

The porridge.

Within minutes...

Her expression changed.

She repeated the analysis.

Then repeated it again using a second instrument.

The results remained identical.

She immediately picked up the phone.

"Dr. Harris?"

"We have a problem."

---

Dr. Harris arrived at the laboratory less than five minutes later.

Lisa handed him the printed report.

He scanned it once.

Then again.

His face turned pale.

"You're certain?"

She nodded.

"I verified it three times."

"There isn't any possibility of contamination."

Dr. Harris slowly lowered the report.

The white powder wasn't medicine.

It wasn't a nutritional supplement.

It wasn't harmless.

The laboratory had identified an extremely concentrated sedative capable of severely suppressing breathing in elderly stroke patients.

Combined with Eleanor's existing medication...

It could have been fatal.

---

Dr. Harris immediately contacted hospital administration.

Within minutes...

The hospital's legal department...

Risk management team...

And chief medical officer...

Were all gathered inside a private conference room.

The atmosphere turned deadly serious.

One executive finally asked,

"Are we dealing with attempted murder?"

No one answered.

Because no one wanted to say the words aloud.

---

Meanwhile...

Claire noticed unusual activity throughout the hospital.

Doctors she had never seen before walked quickly toward the administration offices.

Security officers began speaking quietly into their radios.

Something had changed.

She knew it.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

**Leave now.**

Claire looked toward the elevator.

Then toward Room 812.

Only one security officer stood nearby.

She could still walk away.

No one had accused her yet.

She slowly picked up her handbag.

---

Before she reached the elevator...

Michael stepped into the hallway.

"Leaving already?"

Claire smiled.

"I thought I'd grab some coffee."

Michael looked at her for several seconds.

"You can wait."

"The test results should be ready soon."

Claire's smile stiffened.

"I'm sure they're fine."

"So am I."

Michael answered calmly.

"Then you won't mind staying."

---

Just then...

The elevator doors opened.

Dr. Harris stepped out.

His face was unusually grim.

He walked directly toward Michael.

Without saying a word...

He handed him the laboratory report.

Michael read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression slowly hardened.

Andrew looked over his shoulder.

The color drained from his face.

"This..."

He whispered.

"...was in Mom's food?"

Dr. Harris nodded.

"I'm afraid so."

Complete silence filled the hallway.

Every nurse stopped working.

Every security guard looked toward Claire.

She felt dozens of eyes fixed on her.

Michael slowly folded the report.

Then looked directly at his wife.

His voice remained calm.

Far calmer than anyone expected.

"Claire."

She couldn't answer.

He took one slow step toward her.

"Where did the powder come from?"

Claire swallowed hard.

"I..."

"It wasn't mine."

Michael never raised his voice.

"Then explain why Cooper tried to stop you."

Claire opened her mouth.

No words came out.

For the first time...

She had no lie prepared.

---

Before anyone could speak again...

A loud bark echoed down the hallway.

Cooper suddenly sprinted toward the hospital entrance.

His nose pressed against the floor.

Following a scent.

Michael immediately noticed.

"He's tracking someone."

The Golden Retriever raced through the automatic doors...

Heading straight into the parking lot.

Michael and Andrew ran after him.

Neither brother realized...

The person Cooper was chasing...

Had been watching Room 812 from inside a black SUV for nearly two hours.
