Chapter 11: The Girl with the Rabbit

They met Lily three days later.

The foster home sat on a quiet street with a broken swing in the yard.

Grace felt nervous in a way she could not explain. She was not trying to replace Aaron. She was not trying to collect pieces of his past.

She was trying to honor a promise.

A social worker led them into a small visiting room.

Lily sat at a table, older than in the photograph now, nine years old, with the same serious eyes. A worn stuffed rabbit rested beside her.

Noah whispered, “That’s her.”

Lily looked at them cautiously.

Grace knelt so she would not tower over her.

“Hi, Lily. My name is Grace. This is Noah.”

Lily’s eyes moved to the baseball cap.

“That was Aaron’s,” she said.

Grace’s breath caught.

“You remember him?”

Lily nodded.

“He carried me when I was scared. He said if I ever got lost, I should look for the people who keep promises.”

Noah stepped forward and held out the badge.

“My dad left this for me. But I think it’s kind of yours too.”

Lily stared at it.

Her lips trembled.

“He found me?”

Grace took Aaron’s letter from her bag.

“He never stopped trying.”

Lily looked down at the letter. She did not cry loudly. She only pressed the stuffed rabbit to her chest and closed her eyes.

Grace reached across the table, offering her hand.

Lily hesitated.

Then she took it.

In that moment, Grace understood the final gift Aaron had sent home.

Not money.

May you like

Not documents.

A mission for their broken hearts.
