Chapter 3: The Badge in Noah’s Palm

The badge was small, worn, and silver.

Noah turned it over in his hand. It was not shiny like a toy. It looked old, scratched, and important.

“Was this Dad’s?” he asked.

Sergeant Miller nodded.

“It was the first badge your father ever earned after joining his unit. He carried it for years.”

Noah held it carefully.

“Why did he give it to me?”

The soldier looked at Grace before answering.

“Because he said you would understand it one day.”

Grace pressed the folded flag closer to her chest.

“What happened?” she asked quietly.

The three soldiers exchanged a look.

Sergeant Miller’s voice softened.

“Captain Walker saved lives. Many lives. There was an evacuation. A group was trapped, and he refused to leave until everyone else was safe.”

Grace closed her eyes.

She did not ask for more.

She did not need the details. She knew Aaron. If someone needed help, he would stay.

That was the man she loved.

Noah tugged at Sergeant Miller’s sleeve.

“Was my dad scared?”

The soldier’s face tightened with emotion.

“Yes,” he said honestly. “But he was brave.”

Noah looked down at the badge.

“Brave means you still do what is right.”

Sergeant Miller froze.

Then he smiled sadly.

“He taught you that?”

Noah nodded.

“He said it every night.”

The soldier looked away, struggling to hold himself together.

Grace watched him and realized something.

Aaron had not just been her husband. Not just Noah’s father.

He had been someone other people depended on too.

And now all those people had come home with pieces of him.
