Chapter 14: The Day Lily Came Home

Three months after the knock on the porch, Lily came to stay.
Not forever yet. Not officially.
But for the first time, she arrived with a suitcase instead of a social worker’s folder.
Grace opened the front door before Lily could knock.
Noah ran past her.
“You’re here!”
Lily smiled shyly.
“I’m here.”
Mrs. Ellis watched from her porch, pretending to water flowers that had already drowned from too much attention.
Grace helped Lily carry her suitcase upstairs.
The spare room was small but bright. Noah had taped a drawing to the wall: four people under an oak tree. Aaron was drawn as a golden star above them.
Lily stared at it.
“That’s your dad?”
Noah nodded.
“He watches the tree.”
Lily touched the drawing.
“I don’t know if I remember my parents anymore.”
Grace sat beside her on the bed.
“That’s okay. Remembering is not the only way to love someone.”
Lily looked at her.
“What if I forget Aaron too?”
Grace handed her a copy of the photograph from the metal case.
Aaron stood beside little Lily, smiling gently.
“Then we’ll remember together.”
Lily held the photo carefully.
That night, the four chairs at the kitchen table became three filled seats and one empty place that no longer felt only empty.
It felt honored.
Before bed, Noah stood in Lily’s doorway.
“My dad used to say something every night.”
Lily looked up.
“What?”
Noah smiled.
“Brave doesn’t mean you never feel scared.”
Lily finished softly, surprising him.
“Brave means you still do what is right.”
Noah blinked.
“He told you too?”
May you like
Lily nodded.
And from the hallway, Grace heard them both laugh.
