Chapter 8: The Video He Left Behind

Grace borrowed an old laptop from her neighbor, Mrs. Ellis, because hers had stopped working weeks ago.

Noah sat beside her as she plugged in the flash drive.

There was one video file.

Its title read:

“For My Two Favorite People.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Then she clicked play.

Aaron appeared on the screen.

He was sitting on the same porch where the soldiers had stood. He looked tired, but he smiled the way he always did when trying to make Grace feel safe.

“Hey, Gracie,” he said.

Grace made a sound between a laugh and a sob.

Noah leaned toward the screen.

“Dad…”

Aaron continued.

“If you’re watching this, I didn’t get to come home the way I promised. I’m sorry. I know that is not enough, but I need you to hear me. Loving you was the best thing I ever did.”

Grace wiped her face.

“And Noah,” Aaron said, smiling brighter, “my brave boy. I need you to keep asking questions. Big ones. Small ones. Even the ones that make adults cry. Especially those. Questions keep love alive.”

Noah nodded seriously, as if his father could see him.

Aaron looked down for a moment, then back at the camera.

“There are papers on this drive. Insurance. Legal documents. A letter for the bank. And something else. Something I should have told you sooner.”

Grace went still.

Aaron’s expression changed.

“The badge I left Noah is not just a keepsake. It belongs to a promise I made before he was born.”

The video paused for a second as if the file had skipped.

Then Aaron said the words that made Grace’s heart stop.

“Noah was not the only child I promised to bring home.”
