Chapter 4: The First Line

After the soldiers left, the house felt too quiet.

The folded flag rested on the dining table. The badge sat beside it. The letter remained in Noah’s lap.

Grace wanted to take it from him, to read it privately, to prepare herself before hearing Aaron’s words.

But Noah held it close.

“Dad wrote it to me,” he said.

Grace sat beside him.

“He wrote it to both of us, sweetheart.”

Noah looked at the first line again.

“My brave boy…”

His voice cracked.

Grace covered his hand with hers.

“You don’t have to read it now.”

“I want to.”

So he read slowly.

“My brave boy, if this letter is in your hands, I need you to take care of your mother in the way only you can. Make her laugh when she forgets how. Hold her hand when the house feels too quiet. And never let anyone tell you that love disappears just because someone is not standing in the room.”

Grace broke.

She turned away, but Noah saw.

He climbed into her lap, letter and all.

“Mom, don’t cry.”

“I’m trying not to.”

“It’s okay,” Noah whispered. “Dad said I should hold your hand.”

He took her hand in both of his.

Grace cried harder, but this time she did not hide it.

For the first time since the knock on the door, she allowed herself to feel the truth.

Aaron was gone.

But his words were still there.

His love was still there.

And somewhere beneath that love was a secret he had trusted them to find.
