Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Couldn't Lose

# CHIPS OF DECEPTION
## Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Couldn't Lose
The applause began before the dealer even pushed the chips forward.
Inside the luxurious Imperial Crown Casino in Las Vegas, hundreds of glittering crystal lights reflected off polished marble floors and gold-trimmed poker tables. Wealthy businessmen, celebrities, and international high rollers crowded around the exclusive VIP poker room, each of them eager to witness history.
And history had just happened.
The dealer slowly pushed another mountain of casino chips toward Isabella Monroe.
"$4.8 million," he announced quietly.
The room erupted.
Some players applauded politely.
Others simply stared.
No one could believe what they had just witnessed.
Again.
For the sixth consecutive hour...
Isabella Monroe had won another impossible hand.
The elegant twenty-eight-year-old woman sat calmly at the end of the table in a luxurious black evening gown. Her long blonde hair rested perfectly over one shoulder, and a pair of diamond earrings sparkled beneath the warm casino lights.
Unlike everyone around her...
She didn't celebrate.
She simply smiled.
Not proudly.
Not arrogantly.
Just... knowingly.
The dealer counted the final stack.
"Your total winnings now exceed twenty-two million dollars."
A ripple of astonishment swept across the room.
Twenty-two million.
In a single afternoon.
Veteran gamblers whispered among themselves.
"I've never seen anything like it."
"Neither have I."
"She's reading the cards."
"No one reads cards that well."
"Then how?"
Nobody had an answer.
---
Across the room...
Marcus Reed watched everything from behind a wall of tinted glass.
As the casino's Security Supervisor, Marcus had spent twenty-five years catching every imaginable form of cheating.
Marked cards.
Hidden cameras.
Magnetic dice.
Invisible ink.
Electronic card readers.
He believed one simple rule.
Nobody beat probability forever.
Especially not inside his casino.
Jason Cole entered the surveillance room carrying a tablet.
"You wanted the statistics."
Marcus took the device.
His calm expression slowly changed.
"Run it again."
Jason nodded.
"I already did."
Marcus studied the numbers.
Isabella had won seventeen of her last eighteen major hands.
Not lucky hands.
Perfect hands.
Each victory came at precisely the right moment.
Each risky decision somehow became the correct one.
Statistically...
It shouldn't happen.
Not once.
Certainly not seventeen times.
Jason folded his arms.
"You think she's cheating."
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He zoomed into one surveillance image.
Isabella reached for her chips.
Her right hand rested naturally on the table.
A simple silver ring caught the camera's attention.
Marcus frowned.
"Zoom further."
The image enlarged.
Nothing unusual.
Just an elegant silver ring with a small clear stone.
No electronics.
No obvious mechanism.
Still...
Marcus couldn't stop looking at it.
"How long has she been wearing it?"
Jason checked the footage.
"Since she entered the casino."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Interesting."
---
Back inside the VIP room...
Another hand began.
The dealer shuffled a brand-new deck under the watchful eyes of three cameras and two independent observers.
Everything followed casino protocol.
No mistakes.
No shortcuts.
The cards were dealt.
Isabella barely looked at hers.
Across from her sat Victor Romano, a billionaire investor known for destroying professional poker players.
Victor smiled confidently.
"Ready to lose one?"
Isabella smiled politely.
"I was hoping you'd ask."
The betting escalated quickly.
One million.
Three million.
Five million.
Neither player hesitated.
Spectators held their breath.
The river card appeared.
Victor pushed every remaining chip forward.
"All in."
Gasps echoed around the table.
Nearly seven million dollars.
Every eye turned toward Isabella.
She looked at Victor for only two seconds.
Then quietly pushed her own chips forward.
"I call."
Victor revealed his cards.
A full house.
Several spectators applauded.
An unbeatable hand...
Or so they thought.
Isabella slowly turned over her cards.
A straight flush.
Complete silence.
The dealer blinked twice before speaking.
"Winner..."
He swallowed.
"Miss Monroe."
No one moved.
Victor stared at the table.
His face slowly lost all color.
"I don't..."
"How..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
Isabella simply collected another mountain of chips.
Twenty-two million had become nearly twenty-nine million.
---
In the surveillance room...
Marcus switched off the monitor.
"Enough."
Jason looked at him.
"What do you want to do?"
Marcus picked up his security badge.
"We're going downstairs."
---
The applause still echoed through the VIP room when two black-suited security officers entered.
Their arrival immediately changed the atmosphere.
Professional gamblers recognized Marcus Reed instantly.
He never approached a table...
Unless something was seriously wrong.
The applause faded.
Conversations stopped.
Even the dealers looked nervous.
Marcus walked calmly toward Isabella.
His posture remained relaxed.
His voice was respectful.
"Miss Monroe."
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"Congratulations on your remarkable evening."
"Thank you."
Marcus smiled politely.
"However..."
"I'm afraid we need a brief inspection."
The entire room became silent.
Victor Romano leaned back in his chair, suddenly interested again.
"What kind of inspection?"
Marcus kept his eyes on Isabella.
"Routine security procedure."
She nodded.
"Of course."
Marcus glanced toward her right hand.
"The ring."
Her smile faded.
"What about it?"
Marcus remained perfectly calm.
"I'd like you to remove it."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
For the first time all evening...
Isabella hesitated.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Marcus noticed.
Jason noticed.
So did every experienced gambler in the room.
Isabella slowly lowered her hand beneath the table.
Her fingers instinctively closed around the silver ring.
A tiny movement.
Almost invisible.
Marcus watched carefully.
"You seem uncomfortable."
She forced another smile.
"It's sentimental."
"I understand."
Marcus replied softly.
"But we still need to inspect it."
Victor Romano laughed quietly.
"I knew it."
Several spectators exchanged suspicious glances.
The whispers began almost immediately.
"It's the ring."
"It has to be."
"Maybe it's transmitting information."
"I've heard of devices like that."
Isabella ignored them.
She looked directly into Marcus' eyes.
"If I refuse?"
Marcus answered without emotion.
"Then we'll freeze your winnings until our investigation is complete."
The room collectively inhaled.
Nearly thirty million dollars.
Frozen.
Isabella remained perfectly still.
Marcus extended one open hand.
"Miss Monroe..."
"Please."
No one breathed.
The dealer stood frozen.
Jason quietly moved one step closer.
The cameras continued recording every second.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
Isabella lifted her right hand.
Everyone expected her to remove the ring.
Instead...
She closed her fingers into a tight fist.
Her blue eyes met Marcus'.
For the first time that evening...
Confidence disappeared from her face.
It was replaced by something far more revealing.
Fear.
Not the fear of losing twenty-nine million dollars.
The fear of losing something else.
Something infinitely more valuable.
Marcus immediately noticed.
His instincts screamed that he had finally found the answer.
But he couldn't shake one unsettling thought.
A woman intelligent enough to beat every player in the room...
Would never make such an obvious mistake.
Unless...
The ring wasn't helping her win.
Unless...
She was protecting it for an entirely different reason.
Behind Marcus, Jason's earpiece crackled.
A dispatcher whispered urgently.
"Supervisor..."
Marcus touched his earpiece.
"What is it?"
The voice replied only one sentence.
His expression changed instantly.
"Sir..."
"We just found a dead dealer in the employee parking garage."
Marcus slowly looked back at Isabella.
She hadn't reacted.
Not even slightly.
As if...
She had already known.
