Chapter 6 — The Ring's True Purpose

CHIPS OF DECEPTION
Chapter 6 — The Ring's True Purpose
Silence filled the VIP poker room.
Marcus Reed read the handwritten note again.
"If you want to meet your father... come alone."
The message had only eight words.
Yet it carried enough weight to change everything.
Isabella stared at the address written beneath it.
The Silver Mirage Casino.
Closed for nearly twelve years.
Located on the forgotten outskirts of Las Vegas.
Marcus folded the note carefully.
"It's a trap."
Isabella didn't argue.
"I know."
"But if there's even a chance..."
"...I have to go."
Jason immediately stepped forward.
"No."
"If whoever wrote this murdered two dealers..."
"They'll kill you."
Isabella looked at him.
"They've had years to kill me."
"They haven't."
Marcus frowned.
"Maybe because they still need something."
Her eyes slowly drifted toward the silver ring resting inside the evidence bag.
"They do."
Back in the surveillance center...
Detective Sarah Lawson enlarged the photograph of the ring.
The forensic report still showed nothing unusual.
Solid silver.
Natural diamond.
No electronics.
No hidden compartment.
No transmitter.
Nothing.
Sarah looked frustrated.
"There has to be something we're missing."
Marcus remained silent.
He remembered Isabella's father.
A casino security investigator.
A man intelligent enough to predict his own disappearance.
He would never tell his daughter to protect an ordinary piece of jewelry.
Never.
Marcus carefully picked up the ring.
He examined it beneath a magnifying lamp.
Nothing.
He rotated it again.
Still nothing.
Then...
A tiny scratch caught the light.
Not a scratch.
An engraving.
Barely visible inside the band.
Three letters.
A.S.M.
Jason frowned.
"What does it mean?"
Nobody knew.
Hours later...
The casino archives finally returned an answer.
A retired employee recognized the initials.
Arthur Sinclair Manufacturing.
A Swiss company.
It had specialized in handcrafted security devices for governments and private banks.
The company had disappeared nearly twenty years earlier.
Marcus immediately leaned forward.
"They didn't make jewelry."
The archivist nodded.
"They made concealment devices."
Sarah looked at the ring again.
"You're saying..."
"It isn't a ring."
Marcus slowly smiled.
"It's hiding something."
The casino laboratory carefully placed the ring beneath an industrial microscope.
For almost an hour...
Nothing happened.
Finally...
One elderly technician quietly spoke.
"I think I found it."
Everyone gathered around.
The tiny diamond wasn't mounted normally.
It rotated.
Only a fraction of a millimeter.
The technician used a specialized instrument.
Click.
The gemstone lifted slightly.
Inside the ring...
Hidden beneath the diamond...
Lay an almost invisible microchip.
No larger than a grain of rice.
The laboratory fell completely silent.
Jason whispered,
"My God..."
Marcus looked toward Isabella.
"Your father wasn't protecting a family keepsake."
"He was protecting data."
The microchip was immediately connected to an isolated forensic computer.
No internet.
No external network.
The files slowly appeared.
Only three items.
A photograph.
A blueprint.
And one encrypted video.
Marcus opened the photograph first.
A younger version of Isabella's father stood beside another man.
Both wore casino security uniforms.
The second man looked strangely familiar.
Marcus stared for several seconds.
Then suddenly remembered.
"The former Head of Security."
Jason looked shocked.
"The man who disappeared eight years ago?"
Marcus nodded slowly.
"So he knew Isabella's father."
Next...
They opened the blueprint.
It wasn't a casino.
It wasn't a hotel.
It was a bank.
Specifically...
A private underground vault beneath the old Silver Mirage Casino.
Marcus frowned.
"So the abandoned casino wasn't the destination."
"It was the entrance."
Finally...
Marcus selected the encrypted video.
The screen flickered.
Then...
A man appeared.
Gray hair.
Gentle eyes.
Isabella gasped.
"Dad..."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
The recording had clearly been made years earlier.
Her father smiled sadly.
"If you're seeing this..."
"Then I couldn't come home."
Isabella covered her mouth.
Marcus quietly stepped back.
Giving her space.
The man continued.
"My name is David Monroe."
"I was never investigating gambling."
"I was investigating information."
David took a slow breath.
"Casinos don't merely collect money."
"They collect secrets."
"Politicians."
"Judges."
"Corporate executives."
"Foreign diplomats."
"Every important person eventually sits at a casino table."
He looked directly into the camera.
"And someone has been recording them all."
Marcus slowly lowered his eyes.
Project Odyssey.
It was true.
David continued.
"I stole the evidence."
"I hid it where only Isabella could eventually find it."
He smiled faintly.
"If you're watching this..."
"You kept the ring."
Isabella burst into tears.
The video continued.
"The real evidence isn't on this chip."
"It's inside Vault Twelve beneath Silver Mirage."
Marcus immediately looked at the blueprint.
Vault Twelve.
Exactly where the map ended.
David nodded toward the camera.
"If the Ghost Player reaches the vault first..."
"Everything is lost."
The recording suddenly glitched.
David looked frightened.
He glanced toward something behind the camera.
"They found me."
He whispered quickly.
"Isabella..."
"Never trust—"
The video stopped.
Abruptly.
The final words were lost.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared at the blank screen.
"He was interrupted."
Sarah nodded.
"They came for him."
Jason looked toward Isabella.
"So your father might already have been dead..."
"...when he recorded that."
She slowly wiped away her tears.
"I don't believe that."
Marcus noticed the certainty in her voice.
"You think he's alive."
She nodded.
"I always have."
Before anyone could respond...
Marcus's office phone rang.
An internal line.
He answered.
"Reed."
Only silence.
Then...
A calm voice.
One Marcus immediately recognized.
Adrian Cross.
"I see you've opened the ring."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"What do you want?"
Adrian laughed softly.
"I warned you."
"The ring was never about poker."
Marcus kept him talking.
"Where's David Monroe?"
A brief pause.
Then Adrian answered.
"Closer than you think."
The line went dead.
Detective Sarah immediately traced the call.
"It wasn't external."
Marcus looked up.
"Where did it come from?"
She swallowed.
"The abandoned Silver Mirage Casino."
Jason frowned.
"Impossible."
"There's no active telephone service there."
Sarah slowly shook her head.
"There is now."
Night fell over Las Vegas.
The city's famous lights glittered across the desert.
Far beyond the Strip...
The abandoned Silver Mirage stood in complete darkness.
Its faded neon sign had not been illuminated for over a decade.
Broken windows reflected the moonlight.
The building looked dead.
Forgotten.
Empty.
Yet...
Inside the deserted casino...
A single office light suddenly switched on.
A man sat alone before dozens of surveillance monitors.
Every screen displayed Marcus.
Jason.
Sarah.
And Isabella.
He calmly adjusted his cufflinks.
Then looked toward another monitor.
A reinforced steel door.
Behind thick bulletproof glass...
An older man with gray hair sat quietly inside a secure room.
Weak.
Bearded.
But unmistakably alive.
David Monroe slowly lifted his head.
The mysterious man smiled.
"Your daughter is coming."
David closed his eyes.
He had feared this day for years.
Because he knew...
The moment Isabella entered Silver Mirage...

The Ghost Player's final game would begin.
