CHIPS OF DECEPTION

Chapter 5 — The Ghost Player

Marcus Reed didn't wait for another explanation.

He sprinted out of the surveillance room.

Jason followed close behind.

Detective Sarah Lawson shouted into her radio.

"All units!"

"Seal the executive floor!"

"Nobody enters Marcus Reed's office!"

Casino guests watched in confusion as dozens of security officers rushed across the marble lobby.

Something far bigger than a cheating investigation was unfolding.

Marcus reached the executive hallway in less than two minutes.

His office door stood slightly open.

He was certain he had locked it before heading downstairs.

He slowly pushed the door open.

The room was empty.

Perfectly clean.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Jason entered behind him.

"It looks normal."

Marcus wasn't convinced.

"It never is."

He walked straight to his computer.

The monitor was still on.

A progress bar filled nearly the entire screen.

FILE TRANSFER: 97% COMPLETE

Jason stepped forward.

"Can you stop it?"

Marcus reached for the keyboard.

Suddenly...

The screen went black.

One sentence appeared.

TOO LATE.

Then...

Every file inside Marcus's computer began deleting itself.

Personnel records.

Security reports.

Archived surveillance footage.

Everything vanished.

Jason unplugged the computer.

But the damage had already been done.

The forensic technicians arrived moments later.

One examined the hard drive.

"It's completely wiped."

Marcus frowned.

"What about the transfer log?"

The technician checked again.

"Still here."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Where did the files go?"

The technician hesitated.

"Not outside the casino."

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

"They were transferred..."

"...to another server inside this building."

Jason looked confused.

"Another server?"

"We only have one."

The technician slowly shook his head.

"Apparently..."

"You have two."

Sarah entered carrying a blueprint of the casino.

"The original construction plans."

Marcus spread them across the conference table.

Every server room was marked.

Except...

One.

A faded section beneath the oldest wing of the casino had been crossed out decades earlier.

Marcus frowned.

"I've worked here twenty-five years."

"I've never seen this room."

Sarah pointed at the blueprint.

"It isn't listed anymore."

Jason whispered,

"Hidden?"

Sarah nodded.

"Very intentionally."

While officers prepared to search the underground area...

Isabella stood alone beside one of the enormous glass windows overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.

Marcus approached quietly.

"You weren't surprised."

She didn't turn around.

"I've been expecting this."

Marcus folded his arms.

"How long?"

"Three years."

Silence.

Finally...

She faced him.

"My father discovered a secret server."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"He told you?"

"He never had the chance."

She reached into her purse.

Carefully removing an old notebook.

Its leather cover had faded with age.

"My father mailed this to me."

"The morning he disappeared."

Marcus accepted it carefully.

Inside...

Every page contained handwritten notes.

Casino names.

Dates.

Employee lists.

Security diagrams.

One phrase appeared again and again.

Ghost Player.

Marcus looked up.

"What does that mean?"

She answered softly.

"I don't know."

"He never explained."

Jason joined them.

"We're ready."

The three of them descended through a forgotten maintenance corridor beneath the casino.

Dust covered every surface.

The deeper they walked...

The older the construction became.

Concrete walls replaced polished marble.

Luxury disappeared.

Only darkness remained.

Eventually...

They reached a rusted steel door.

No casino logo.

No security badge reader.

Only a faded brass plaque.

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Marcus frowned.

"This wasn't on any employee map."

Jason forced the heavy door open.

Cold air rushed out.

Inside...

Rows of humming servers stretched into darkness.

Hundreds of blinking lights illuminated the room.

The equipment looked surprisingly modern.

Someone had maintained it.

Recently.

Sarah slowly walked between the machines.

"This costs millions."

Marcus nodded.

"And nobody knew it existed."

One technician immediately connected a forensic computer.

He stared at the monitor.

"Oh my God..."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What?"

The technician pointed toward thousands of encrypted folders.

"Every casino."

Monte Carlo.

Macau.

London.

Singapore.

Las Vegas.

Every surveillance network connected here.

Jason whispered,

"This isn't one casino."

"It's all of them."

Then another discovery.

Thousands of player profiles.

Every professional gambler.

Every VIP guest.

Every tournament champion.

Each file included years of surveillance.

Bank accounts.

Medical histories.

Travel records.

Private conversations.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"They've been spying on everyone."

Sarah nodded.

"For years."

Suddenly...

One folder caught Marcus's attention.

ISABELLA MONROE

He opened it.

More than four thousand pages.

Photographs dating back to when Isabella was only sixteen years old.

School records.

Driving tests.

Hospital visits.

Passport renewals.

Even family vacations.

Jason looked horrified.

"They've watched her..."

"...her entire life."

Isabella quietly nodded.

"I know."

Marcus looked at her.

"You knew?"

"I found part of the file two years ago."

She lowered her eyes.

"That's when I realized..."

"I wasn't gambling."

"I was being followed."

Marcus opened another folder.

His own.

Twenty-eight years of employment.

Every promotion.

Every vacation.

Every phone call.

Even confidential conversations inside his office.

Jason checked his own profile.

It was there too.

Everyone connected to casino security had been monitored.

Nobody escaped.

Then...

The technician called out again.

"Sir."

Marcus hurried over.

"We found Project Odyssey."

A single encrypted directory appeared.

Protected by military-grade encryption.

The technician smiled.

"We're in."

The folder slowly opened.

Inside...

Only one video file.

No documents.

No spreadsheets.

Just a recording.

Marcus pressed play.

Static flickered.

Then...

A familiar face appeared.

Everyone froze.

It was Adrian Cross.

For the first time...

They saw him clearly.

Calm.

Elegant.

Perfectly composed.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"You've found the Ghost Player."

Marcus frowned.

"So that's you."

Adrian smiled.

"No."

"I've never been the Ghost Player."

Silence.

He continued.

"I only work for him."

Jason exchanged a glance with Sarah.

Adrian leaned closer to the camera.

"The Ghost Player has controlled casino intelligence for nearly thirty years."

"He owns no casino."

"He appears in no public records."

"No government knows his identity."

"But every major casino..."

"...answers to him."

Marcus whispered,

"Impossible."

Adrian smiled again.

"You think casinos make money from gambling."

"They don't."

"They make money from information."

The video continued.

"Every player."

"Every billionaire."

"Every politician."

"Every celebrity."

"Every secret whispered across a poker table..."

"...belongs to us."

Sarah's face hardened.

"This is blackmail."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"On a global scale."

Adrian looked directly into the camera again.

"Marcus Reed..."

"I've admired your integrity."

"You've spent twenty-five years protecting a casino."

Without realizing...

"You've actually been protecting us."

Marcus clenched his fists.

Adrian continued.

"Isabella Monroe."

"You've been searching for your father."

"I'm afraid..."

"You're too late."

The screen suddenly went black.

One final sentence appeared.

CHECK TABLE SEVEN.

Nothing else.

Everyone rushed back upstairs.

VIP Table Seven remained exactly as it had after Isabella's final hand.

The chips were still stacked neatly.

The cards had never been moved.

Marcus slowly examined the table.

"What are we looking for?"

Isabella knelt beside her chair.

Her fingers gently slid beneath the polished wooden edge.

She suddenly stopped.

"There."

Hidden underneath...

Someone had taped a tiny black envelope.

Marcus carefully removed it.

There was no name.

Only one silver chess knight embossed on the front.

Inside...

A single memory card.

And a handwritten note.

Marcus unfolded it.

His heartbeat stopped.

The message read:

"If you want to meet your father... come alone."

Beneath the sentence...

A location.

An abandoned casino on the outskirts of Las Vegas.

And a time.

Tomorrow. Midnight.

Isabella stared at the note in disbelief.

"My father..."

Marcus looked at her.

For the first time...

He wasn't sure whether they had just found hope...

May you like

Or walked straight into the most dangerous trap of their lives.
