Chapter 7 — The Casino Conspiracy

CHIPS OF DECEPTION
Chapter 7 — The Casino Conspiracy
The Silver Mirage Casino stood like a ghost beneath the Nevada moon.
Once the most glamorous casino in Las Vegas...
Now it was nothing more than a forgotten shell of broken glass, rusted signs, and fading memories.
Marcus parked nearly two hundred yards away.
"No lights."
"No guards."
Jason looked through binoculars.
"Too quiet."
Detective Sarah Lawson loaded her sidearm.
"Which means we're already expected."
Isabella never took her eyes off the abandoned building.
"My father is inside."
Marcus looked at her.
"We still don't know if Adrian was telling the truth."
She answered softly.
"I know."
"But if he lied..."
"I'll finally stop searching."
"If he didn't..."
"I'll finally find him."
Marcus had no intention of honoring the note's instructions.
"Come alone."
Instead...
A SWAT team quietly surrounded the abandoned casino from every direction.
Snipers occupied neighboring rooftops.
Unmarked police vehicles blocked every nearby road.
No one would escape.
At least...
That was the plan.
At exactly midnight...
Isabella stepped through the casino's broken front entrance alone.
A hidden earpiece connected her to Marcus.
"We're with you."
She whispered,
"I know."
The enormous lobby echoed beneath her footsteps.
Old slot machines stood covered in dust.
Collapsed chandeliers hung from cracked ceilings.
The casino smelled of rust and forgotten years.
Then...
Every light suddenly turned on.
One after another.
The abandoned casino came alive.
Soft jazz music began playing through ancient speakers.
The giant roulette wheel slowly started spinning.
Slot machines flashed.
Poker tables illuminated.
It looked exactly as it had twenty years ago.
Only...
There wasn't a single guest.
A voice echoed through the empty gaming floor.
"Welcome back, Miss Monroe."
Adrian Cross emerged from the shadows wearing the same immaculate white dinner jacket.
His expression remained calm.
Almost friendly.
Isabella stopped walking.
"I came for my father."
Adrian smiled.
"I know."
"Everyone always comes looking for someone."
Marcus whispered through the earpiece,
"Keep him talking."
Instead...
Adrian surprised them.
"I never kidnapped David Monroe."
Isabella frowned.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's true."
"I merely..."
"...kept him alive."
Marcus listened carefully.
"What game is he playing?"
Sarah quietly answered,
"He's telling the truth."
Marcus looked at her.
"How do you know?"
She nodded toward Isabella.
"He hasn't lied once."
Adrian slowly stepped closer.
"Your father stole something."
"The Ghost Player wanted it back."
"So I hid him."
Isabella blinked.
"You hid him?"
Adrian nodded.
"For thirteen years."
"From the most dangerous man I've ever met."
Marcus's instincts screamed that something wasn't right.
Everything they believed was changing.
Again.
Suddenly...
The abandoned casino doors slammed shut.
Every exit locked automatically.
Red emergency lights illuminated the room.
Jason shouted into his radio.
"Marcus!"
"The SWAT teams just disappeared from our cameras!"
Marcus looked at the surveillance feed inside the command vehicle.
Every officer...
Every sniper...
Every patrol car...
Gone.
Not physically.
Only from the cameras.
Every video feed had been replaced by static.
Someone had hacked the police network.
Again.
Inside the casino...
Adrian sighed.
"He knows you're here."
Isabella frowned.
"Who?"
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
"The Ghost Player."
A slow clap echoed through the building.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Everyone turned.
An older man in an expensive charcoal suit stepped onto the balcony overlooking the gaming floor.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
Elegant smile.
He looked more like a billionaire investor than a criminal.
Marcus froze.
"No..."
Sarah whispered,
"Who is he?"
Marcus couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"Edward Sullivan."
Sarah frowned.
"The chairman of Imperial Crown Resorts?"
Marcus nodded slowly.
"The man who owns this casino..."
"...and fourteen others."
Edward smiled warmly.
"Marcus."
"You've always been my finest employee."
Marcus gripped his pistol.
"You built Project Odyssey."
Edward gave a slight bow.
"I perfected it."
He slowly descended the grand staircase.
"You know..."
"People think casinos make money from gambling."
"They don't."
"They make fortunes..."
"From information."
He gestured around the room.
"Politicians gamble."
"Judges gamble."
"Corporate CEOs gamble."
"They drink."
"They boast."
"They confess."
"They reveal secrets worth billions."
Edward smiled.
"And we simply listened."
Sarah's face hardened.
"You blackmailed them."
Edward shrugged.
"I offered discretion."
Marcus realized something.
"The dead dealers..."
Edward nodded.
"They became curious."
"They copied files."
"They had to disappear."
Jason stepped forward angrily.
"You murdered your own employees."
Edward calmly corrected him.
"I protected my investment."
Adrian suddenly spoke.
"You've protected nothing."
Edward looked toward him.
"I wondered when you'd betray me."
Adrian smiled faintly.
"I didn't betray you."
"I finally chose the right side."
Edward laughed.
"You were always sentimental."
He slowly raised one hand.
Instantly...
Dozens of armed men emerged from hidden doors throughout the casino.
Professional mercenaries.
Silenced rifles.
Laser sights.
Within seconds...
Marcus.
Sarah.
Jason.
Adrian.
And Isabella...
Were completely surrounded.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"We're trapped."
Jason counted quickly.
"At least thirty."
Sarah whispered,
"Our backup isn't coming."
Marcus understood.
Their communications had been jammed.
No one outside knew what was happening.
Edward calmly approached Isabella.
"Give me the ring."
She remained motionless.
"You've spent thirteen years chasing it."
Edward smiled.
"And now..."
"I'm tired."
He extended one hand.
"The ring."
Instead...
Isabella removed it.
Everyone watched.
She looked at the silver band one final time.
Then...
She tossed it.
Not toward Edward.
Toward Adrian.
Edward's smile disappeared.
Adrian caught the ring effortlessly.
Marcus frowned.
"What are you doing?"
Isabella answered quietly.
"My father never trusted me with it."
"He trusted Adrian."
Silence.
Every weapon in the room remained aimed at them.
Edward slowly laughed.
"So..."
"You finally figured it out."
Marcus stared at Adrian.
"You've been protecting her..."
"...this entire time."
Adrian nodded.
"I promised David I would."
Jason looked stunned.
"But you've been hunting her."
Adrian smiled sadly.
"I had to."
"If Edward believed I was protecting Isabella..."
"She would've died years ago."
Everything suddenly made sense.
The mysterious appearances.
The disappearances.
The warnings.
Adrian had never been chasing Isabella.
He had been staying one step ahead of Edward.
Keeping her alive.
Edward sighed.
"A touching reunion."
"But unfortunately..."
"It's over."
He snapped his fingers.
His mercenaries raised their rifles.
Marcus quietly tightened his grip on his pistol.
There was no escape.
Then...
A loud explosion shook the entire casino.
The floor trembled violently.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
Another explosion followed.
The lights flickered.
Edward's confident expression vanished.
"What?"
A security guard shouted into his radio.
"Sir!"
"Someone breached the underground vault!"
Edward's face turned pale.
"No..."
He whispered.
"That's impossible."
Adrian smiled for the first time.
"It wasn't impossible."
"It was planned."
Marcus looked confused.
"By who?"
Before Adrian could answer...
A familiar voice echoed through the casino.
Strong.
Calm.
Very much alive.
"By me."
Everyone turned toward the massive steel vault beneath the gaming floor.
The reinforced door slowly opened.
An older man stepped into the light.
Gray beard.
Thin from years of captivity.
But standing proudly.
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
"Dad..."
David Monroe was alive.
And he wasn't alone.
Behind him...
More than twenty FBI agents stormed into the casino with assault rifles raised.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
May you like
The final game had begun.
