Chapter 2 — The Ring Inspection

# CHIPS OF DECEPTION

## Chapter 2 — The Ring Inspection

The words echoed through Marcus Reed's mind.

*"We just found a dead dealer in the employee parking garage."*

For a split second, everything around him disappeared.

The applause.

The poker table.

The mountain of casino chips.

The suspicious silver ring.

Nothing mattered more than a dead employee.

Marcus pressed his earpiece.

"Secure the scene."

"No one goes near the body."

"I'm on my way."

He looked back at Isabella Monroe.

She still sat calmly at the VIP table.

Her right hand remained tightly closed.

The silver ring was still hidden inside her fist.

Marcus made a decision.

"Jason."

"Stay with Miss Monroe."

"No one leaves this room."

Jason nodded immediately.

"Understood."

Marcus turned and walked quickly toward the elevators.

The casino floor erupted into whispers.

---

Only minutes later...

The employee parking garage had become an active crime scene.

Yellow police tape surrounded a black luxury sedan.

Paramedics stood silently nearby.

The victim had already been covered.

Marcus recognized the shoes immediately.

Black leather.

Custom Italian.

Dealer Michael Harris.

Thirty-eight years old.

One of the casino's most experienced poker dealers.

Detective Sarah Lawson from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police approached Marcus.

"You knew him?"

Marcus nodded.

"For nearly fifteen years."

Sarah looked toward the body.

"No wallet."

"No phone."

"No signs of robbery."

Marcus frowned.

"So why kill him?"

Sarah answered quietly.

"That's what we're trying to figure out."

---

The medical examiner carefully uncovered part of Michael's jacket.

There was almost no blood.

One tiny puncture wound beneath his left ear.

Marcus stared.

"No struggle."

Sarah nodded.

"He was dead before he hit the ground."

Professional.

Clean.

Silent.

Whoever had done this...

Had experience.

---

One crime scene technician approached.

"We found this."

He handed Sarah a casino playing card sealed inside an evidence bag.

The Ace of Spades.

Marcus frowned.

"That wasn't from our tables."

Sarah examined it carefully.

Something had been written across the back in black ink.

**The game has begun.**

Marcus felt a chill.

---

Back inside the Imperial Crown Casino...

Jason remained beside Isabella.

Neither of them spoke for nearly ten minutes.

Around them...

Players quietly left the VIP room.

Nobody wanted to be near a security investigation.

Victor Romano stood up.

"So..."

"Does this mean the game is over?"

Jason answered professionally.

"The casino is temporarily suspending all VIP tables."

Victor shrugged.

"I'll cash out tomorrow."

He walked away.

But before leaving...

He glanced once at Isabella.

Almost as if he recognized her.

---

Soon...

Only three people remained inside the room.

Isabella.

Jason.

And the dealer.

Jason finally spoke.

"Would you like some water?"

She nodded.

"Please."

As Jason stepped away...

His radio crackled.

He answered immediately.

"Yes?"

The dispatcher whispered.

"We've identified the victim."

Jason frowned.

"I already know who he is."

"No..."

The dispatcher interrupted.

"I mean..."

"He dealt Miss Monroe's table three different times this week."

Jason slowly turned toward Isabella.

She looked out the window.

Watching the lights of Las Vegas.

Expressionless.

---

Marcus returned nearly forty minutes later.

He looked exhausted.

Jason immediately approached him.

"The victim dealt her table."

Marcus wasn't surprised.

"I expected that."

Jason blinked.

"You did?"

Marcus nodded.

"Whoever left that card wanted us to connect the murder to Isabella."

Jason lowered his voice.

"You think someone framed her?"

Marcus looked across the room.

"I don't know."

"But somebody wants us looking in one direction."

---

Marcus walked toward Isabella again.

"I'm sorry for the delay."

She gave a small nod.

"I heard something happened."

"A dealer died."

Her expression softened.

"I'm sorry."

Marcus watched her carefully.

No panic.

No fake surprise.

Just genuine sadness.

Interesting.

---

He slowly extended one hand.

"May I see the ring now?"

This time...

She didn't refuse.

Without a word...

She carefully removed the silver ring.

Placed it into Marcus' palm.

The room remained silent.

Jason immediately photographed it.

Marcus examined every millimeter.

Solid silver.

No seams.

No batteries.

No hidden compartment.

He handed it to Jason.

"X-ray."

---

Within fifteen minutes...

The casino's technical laboratory completed its examination.

Jason entered carrying the report.

Marcus scanned the results.

No electronic components.

No magnets.

No transmitter.

No hidden microphone.

Nothing.

The ring was exactly what it appeared to be.

A handcrafted silver ring with a small natural diamond.

Jason looked confused.

"So..."

"She isn't cheating?"

Marcus slowly placed the report on the table.

"I didn't say that."

---

He returned to Isabella.

"The ring is clean."

She smiled slightly.

"I told you."

Marcus studied her face.

"Then tell me something else."

"Why were you so afraid to let go of it?"

For the first time...

Her confidence disappeared.

She looked down at the ring.

"My father gave it to me."

"The day before he died."

Silence.

Marcus waited.

She continued softly.

"He told me..."

"Never let anyone take it."

Jason crossed his arms.

"Why?"

She shook her head.

"He never explained."

Marcus couldn't tell whether she was telling the truth.

But one thing was obvious.

The ring meant far more than money.

---

Just then...

A surveillance technician rushed into the room.

"Sir."

Marcus looked up.

"What happened?"

"We reviewed every camera covering Table Seven."

"And?"

The technician connected a tablet to the room's monitor.

"There's something strange."

Video footage appeared.

The final poker hand replayed from three different camera angles.

Everything looked normal.

Until...

The technician paused the video.

"Look behind Miss Monroe."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

A man wearing a white dinner jacket briefly appeared among the spectators.

Only for two seconds.

Then he vanished into the crowd.

Marcus frowned.

"I don't recognize him."

The technician zoomed in.

"We checked every camera."

"He appears only once."

Jason looked confused.

"That's impossible."

"There are over four hundred cameras in this casino."

The technician nodded.

"Exactly."

"He walks into one camera..."

"And never appears on another."

Marcus replayed the footage again.

The man never looked toward the poker table.

He looked directly...

At Isabella.

---

Marcus immediately ordered facial recognition.

Twenty minutes later...

The computer returned no match.

No employee.

No hotel guest.

No casino member.

No driver's license.

No passport.

Nothing.

The man's face...

Didn't exist in any database available to law enforcement.

---

Jason looked unsettled.

"Who is he?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"I don't know."

"But I don't think he came here to gamble."

---

Across the room...

Isabella accidentally glanced at the frozen surveillance image.

The moment she saw the man in the white jacket...

The color drained from her face.

She whispered something so quietly...

Only Marcus heard it.

"No..."

"He found me."

Marcus looked sharply at her.

"You know him?"

She immediately realized her mistake.

"No."

Marcus stepped closer.

"You just said he found you."

She remained silent.

Jason noticed her hands trembling.

Not from fear of security.

Not from losing her winnings.

From recognizing the man.

---

Marcus slowly closed the tablet.

"The ring wasn't the secret."

He looked directly into Isabella's eyes.

"The real question..."

"Is who you're running from."

Before Isabella could answer...

Every light inside the VIP poker room suddenly went dark.

Emergency alarms exploded throughout the casino.

Guests screamed.

Security radios erupted with frantic voices.

Then...

A single gunshot echoed somewhere on the casino floor.

And through the darkness...

A man's voice calmly announced over the casino speakers:

"Miss Monroe..."

"You've been hiding long enough."
