Chapter 12 Charlie's Forgotten Memories

Chapter 12 — The Vault That Was Never Supposed to Exist

Daniel didn't reply to the message.

He simply stared at the screen.

**We know you found the key.**

No threats.

No demands.

Only a statement.

Someone was watching him again.

Harold Bennett slowly closed his briefcase.

"They've always known."

Daniel looked up.

"You expected this?"

Harold nodded.

"Richard told me the moment you opened the envelope..."

"...someone would know within hours."

Olivia frowned.

"How?"

"The envelope was hidden for years."

Harold sighed.

"Because Orion never stopped watching Richard Brooks."

Daniel slipped the brass key into his pocket.

"We're going to Washington."

Harold immediately shook his head.

"No."

"That's exactly what they want."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Harold pulled another document from his briefcase.

It was an old map of the Federal Reserve building.

One location had been circled in red.

**Vault 117.**

But something was strange.

The vault wasn't listed on any official blueprint.

Instead, someone had written a note in Richard's handwriting.

**Vault 117 doesn't exist on government records.**

Olivia whispered,

"A secret vault?"

Harold nodded.

"Richard paid for it under a false identity almost thirty years ago."

Daniel looked confused.

"What could possibly be worth hiding for that long?"

Harold answered quietly.

"I've wondered the same thing every day since he died."

Before Daniel could ask another question...

The television in the living room suddenly turned on by itself.

Every channel displayed the same breaking news.

**FBI TRANSPORT ATTACKED.**

Daniel grabbed the remote and turned up the volume.

The reporter spoke rapidly.

"This morning, an armored federal convoy transporting high-profile inmate Victor Langford was ambushed just outside Richmond, Virginia."

Olivia's face turned pale.

"Victor..."

The reporter continued.

"Authorities have confirmed multiple casualties."

"Victor Langford is missing."

The room fell silent.

Samuel Carter's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

His expression changed within seconds.

"No..."

"How many?"

Another pause.

"I understand."

He slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel already knew the answer.

"They took him."

Samuel nodded.

"Not escaped."

"Taken."

Harold quietly whispered,

"Orion."

Daniel looked back at the television.

Helicopter footage showed burning armored vehicles.

Federal agents running through smoke.

No sign of Victor.

Only chaos.

Then Daniel's own phone vibrated again.

Another unknown message.

This time...

A photograph.

Victor Langford stood alive beside three unidentified men wearing expensive black suits.

Behind them...

A large silver emblem was mounted on a marble wall.

A circle.

Inside it...

Three stars.

Samuel's expression darkened.

"I know that symbol."

Daniel looked at him.

"What is it?"

Samuel answered slowly.

"Only rumors existed."

"I never believed it was real."

Harold quietly finished the sentence.

"The Council of Three."

Daniel frowned.

"What is that?"

Harold's voice became almost a whisper.

"The people who built Orion."

"The people Richard spent twenty-five years trying to expose."

Daniel looked down at the brass key in his hand.

Then back at the television.

Victor hadn't been rescued.

He had been retrieved.

Like someone recovering valuable property.

Another message arrived.

Only one sentence.

**Bring the key to Vault 117... or we'll come to you instead.**

Daniel slowly closed his phone.

He looked at Olivia.

Then Samuel.

Then Harold.

"There isn't a choice anymore."

Outside the mansion...

A black helicopter silently appeared above the trees.

It wasn't police.

It wasn't military.

There were no markings.

Only the same silver emblem...

Three stars inside a circle.
