Chapter 15 The Recording Beneath the Perch

Chapter 15 — Richard Brooks' Final Trap
Darkness swallowed the mansion.
Every light.
Every security camera.
Every electronic lock.
Gone.
The gunmen froze.
Someone shouted,
"Generator!"
Another yelled,
"Find the control room!"
But before anyone could move...
Richard Brooks' voice echoed once again through hidden speakers installed decades earlier.
"If Orion is inside my home..."
"...then my family has already escaped."
Victor Langford listened from a secure command vehicle parked outside the mansion.
His face darkened.
"He planned this..."
One of his men looked confused.
"Sir?"
Victor clenched his fists.
"Richard designed this house."
"He knew every wall."
"Every wire."
"Every hiding place."
Inside the secret tunnel...
Daniel, Olivia, and Samuel kept moving through complete darkness.
Only Samuel's flashlight cut through the narrow passage.
Daniel looked back.
"What happened?"
Samuel smiled grimly.
"The emergency defense system."
"Richard built it himself."
Olivia frowned.
"I thought this mansion was renovated five years ago."
Samuel nodded.
"It was."
"But Richard never removed the original wiring."
"He only hid it."
Daniel suddenly heard a deep rumble.
The ground shook beneath their feet.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Samuel immediately understood.
"The east wing."
"What?"
"He just collapsed the east wing."
Daniel stopped walking.
"He destroyed his own house?"
Samuel looked at him.
"No."
"He destroyed the only route Orion could use to reach this tunnel."
Far behind them...
The sound of collapsing stone echoed through the underground passage.
The trap had worked.
Outside...
Victor watched one-third of the mansion sink into itself.
Massive marble columns crashed through the entrance hall.
Smoke rose into the night sky.
Victor whispered,
"You stubborn old fool."
Back inside the tunnel...
The passage finally opened into a forgotten train platform buried beneath the estate.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
Rust-covered railway tracks stretched into darkness.
An old electric railcar sat waiting.
Samuel laughed softly.
"I never thought I'd see it again."
Daniel looked at him.
"You knew about this?"
Samuel nodded.
"Richard called it his insurance policy."
Olivia stepped inside the railcar.
Everything still worked.
Fresh batteries.
Fuel.
Emergency supplies.
Even bottled water.
Richard had prepared this escape years before his death.
Daniel sat silently for a moment.
His eyes fell on a small wooden box resting on the driver's seat.
Inside...
Another envelope.
Richard's handwriting.
**For Daniel. Only if the mansion falls.**
Daniel slowly opened it.
There was only one sheet of paper.
One sentence.
**Trust no one... until you meet the woman in the lighthouse.**
Samuel frowned.
"The lighthouse..."
Daniel immediately remembered.
The island.
The coordinates hidden inside the brass key.
Before anyone could speak again...
The railcar's old radio crackled to life.
Static filled the cabin.
Then...
A calm female voice spoke.
"Daniel..."
Everyone froze.
"I've been waiting thirty years."
Daniel looked toward the speaker.
"Who are you?"
A brief pause.
Then the woman answered.
"My name..."
"...is your mother."
The transmission ended.
Silence returned.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
Samuel stared at the radio in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
Daniel slowly looked up.
"My mother died."
Samuel whispered,
"That's what we were all told."
Outside...
Victor Langford stood among the burning ruins of the Brooks mansion.
One of his men handed him Harold Bennett's brass key.
Victor examined it for only a second...
Then smiled.
"This one is fake."
He looked toward the dark ocean.
"They're going to the island."
He calmly climbed back into the command vehicle.
"Prepare the helicopters."
"This ends before sunrise."
