Chapter 13 The Kill Order

Chapter 13 — The Council of Three
The helicopter never landed.
It circled once above the Brooks mansion, slow and deliberate, as though letting everyone inside know they had been found.
Then it disappeared beyond the trees.
No shots.
No warning.
Just a message.
They were being watched.
Samuel Carter immediately drew the curtains.
"We have to leave."
Daniel shook his head.
"If they wanted us dead, we'd already be dead."
Harold looked toward the window.
"No."
"They want the key."
"And they believe you'll eventually use it."
Daniel pulled the brass key from his pocket.
It looked ordinary.
Small.
Heavy.
Polished by decades of use.
Nothing about it suggested it was worth killing for.
Samuel examined it carefully.
Then he suddenly frowned.
"Turn it over."
Daniel did.
Engraved on the opposite side...
Barely visible beneath years of scratches...
Were three tiny numbers.
**11-7-3**
Olivia leaned closer.
"Vault 117?"
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Coordinates."
Harold's eyes widened.
"My God..."
Richard hadn't hidden one secret.
He had hidden two.
Samuel immediately entered the numbers into his encrypted tablet.
A map appeared.
Not Washington.
Not the Federal Reserve.
The coordinates pointed somewhere else entirely.
A private island...
Off the coast of South Carolina.
The island wasn't labeled.
Only a gray satellite image.
Dense forest.
One abandoned lighthouse.
Nothing more.
Harold whispered,
"Richard tricked them."
Daniel looked confused.
"The vault was bait."
Harold nodded.
"He knew Orion would eventually find the key."
"So he made them believe the vault was the destination."
Samuel stared at the map.
"The real secret..."
"...is on that island."
Before anyone could speak...
The mansion lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every television turned on simultaneously.
Static filled every screen.
A distorted voice echoed through the house.
"Daniel Brooks..."
The room froze.
"We've waited thirty years."
The voice continued.
"Your father was stubborn."
"But perhaps..."
"...his son is smarter."
Daniel stepped closer to the television.
"Who are you?"
The static cleared.
For only three seconds...
A face appeared.
An elderly man.
Silver hair.
Perfectly tailored black suit.
Calm blue eyes.
He smiled politely.
"My name no longer matters."
"But people once called me..."
"The First Chairman."
The image vanished.
The television returned to static.
Then one final sentence appeared in white letters.
**The island is already surrounded.**
The screens went black.
Silence filled the mansion.
Olivia looked at Daniel.
"They know."
Samuel slowly nodded.
"They knew about the coordinates before we did."
Harold closed his eyes.
"Richard planned for this."
Daniel looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Harold reached into the lining of his old briefcase.
There was one final hidden compartment.
Inside...
Lay a second brass key.
Almost identical to the first.
Daniel stared.
"My father made two?"
Harold smiled sadly.
"No."
"He made everyone believe there were only two."
He looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"There are actually three."
"And only one opens the truth."
Before Daniel could respond...
A deafening explosion shook the front gate.
The mansion security alarms screamed to life.
Samuel looked at the surveillance monitor.
Dozens of black SUVs were racing up the private driveway.
This time...
Orion wasn't watching anymore.
They were coming inside.
