Chapter 5 The Voice Hidden Inside Charlie

Chapter 5 — The Hidden Room Beneath the Mansion
The metallic click echoed through the hallway.
Daniel tightened his grip on the old steel cane.
Neither he nor Olivia moved.
Charlie climbed down from the chandelier onto the bookshelf, staring at the wall behind it.
The bird whispered,
"He's opening it..."
Daniel slowly approached the antique bookshelf.
It stretched from floor to ceiling, packed with leather-bound books his father had collected over three decades.
Nothing looked unusual.
Until he noticed a thin line in the hardwood floor.
A seam.
Almost invisible.
He crouched and brushed away a layer of dust.
The seam continued behind the bookshelf.
Olivia stared in disbelief.
"There can't be a door there..."
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he examined the shelves carefully.
One book stood slightly farther out than the others.
A thick black volume titled American Maritime Law.
His father had never practiced maritime law.
Daniel wrapped his fingers around the spine.
He pulled.
Nothing.
Then he twisted it gently.
A heavy mechanical rumble shook the wall.
The entire bookshelf slowly slid sideways.
Olivia gasped.
Behind it...
A narrow concrete staircase disappeared into darkness.
A basement.
Charlie let out a loud whistle.
Then repeated a sentence in the same unfamiliar male voice.
"I told you he'd find it."
Daniel looked at the bird.
"You've been here before."
Charlie bobbed his head.
"I've been here before."
The exact same words.
Not an answer.
A memory.
Daniel reached for the wall switch beside the staircase.
It didn't work.
The basement remained completely dark.
He switched on the flashlight on his phone.
The beam revealed old concrete steps leading downward.
Dust covered most of them.
Except...
For a fresh trail of footprints.
Someone had walked down recently.
Very recently.
Daniel turned toward Olivia.
"You knew about this?"
She shook her head violently.
"I swear I didn't."
He studied her face.
She looked genuinely shocked.
He believed her.
For the first time that afternoon.
Daniel started down the stairs.
Each step echoed through the narrow passage.
The air grew cooler.
Damp.
The smell of old paper and machine oil filled the tunnel.
At the bottom...
The flashlight revealed a steel door standing half open.
Someone had entered.
Daniel pushed it slowly.
The room beyond looked nothing like an old cellar.
It was a private office.
Large computer monitors lined one wall.
Metal filing cabinets stood against another.
A long wooden desk occupied the center of the room.
Everything was covered with a thin layer of dust...
Except one chair.
Someone had been sitting there recently.
Charlie suddenly flew off Daniel's shoulder.
The bird landed directly on the desk.
He pecked twice against one of the drawers.
Daniel pulled it open.
Inside...
Dozens of folders.
Every one labeled with a name.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business executives.
Federal agents.
Each folder contained photographs, financial records, bank transfers, and handwritten notes.
Daniel's heart pounded.
His father had been building files on powerful people.
Then he noticed one folder lying separately from the others.
It carried only one name.
**DANIEL BROOKS**
His own name.
Slowly...
He opened it.
The first page wasn't a financial report.
It was a birth certificate.
Not the one Daniel had carried his entire life.
A different one.
Different parents.
Different hospital.
Different surname.
Before he could read another line...
A voice echoed through the darkness behind him.
"You were never supposed to see that."
Daniel spun around.
A man stepped out of the shadows...
Holding a pistol pointed directly at his chest.
