Chapter 2 The Name Daniel Was Never Meant to Hear

Chapter 2 — The Words Charlie Was Never Supposed to Remember
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
The unknown message lingered in his mind.
**Don't question your wife. Watch the bird instead.**
It made no sense.
If someone wanted to warn him, why speak in riddles?
He looked from the screen to Charlie.
The macaw had gone unusually quiet.
Instead of chattering, the bird watched Daniel with an intensity that felt almost human.
Olivia finally found her voice.
“Who texted you?”
Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket.
“I don't know.”
She hesitated.
“Can I see it?”
“No.”
The answer came more sharply than he intended.
Olivia lowered her eyes.
Daniel noticed something strange.
She wasn't offended.
She looked... relieved.
As though she was grateful he hadn't shown her the message.
That bothered him even more.
Charlie suddenly whistled twice.
The exact same two-note whistle echoed from somewhere deeper inside the mansion.
Daniel's head snapped toward the hallway.
Olivia froze.
“Did you hear that?”
She answered too quickly.
“No.”
“You didn't hear another whistle?”
“There wasn't one.”
Daniel remained still.
He knew what he had heard.
It hadn't come from outside.
It had come from inside the house.
Charlie flapped his wings excitedly.
Then he spoke again.
This time, not the sentence Daniel had already heard.
A completely different one.
“He isn't supposed to know.”
The voice wasn't Charlie's normal cheerful tone.
It was an exact imitation of a man.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost amused.
Daniel looked at Olivia.
Her hands were shaking.
“Who said that?”
She swallowed.
“I don't know.”
Charlie answered for her.
“She'll never tell him.”
Daniel felt a chill run down his spine.
The bird wasn't repeating random phrases.
It sounded like fragments of a real conversation.
Someone had spoken those exact words inside this house.
Someone Charlie had heard.
Daniel stepped closer to the bird.
“When did you hear that?”
Charlie blinked.
Then repeated the sentence.
“She'll never tell him.”
Nothing more.
Daniel sighed.
“You're asking a bird questions.”
Olivia forced a laugh.
“Exactly.”
But Daniel wasn't listening anymore.
His eyes wandered across the living room.
Everything appeared untouched.
The leather sofa.
The fireplace.
The grand piano.
Then something caught his attention.
A faint muddy footprint.
Near the terrace door.
Too large to belong to Olivia.
Too fresh to have been there for days.
He walked over.
The footprint continued toward the hallway before disappearing on the polished marble floor.
Olivia noticed where he was looking.
“It was probably the gardener.”
“The gardener doesn't come inside.”
She didn't answer.
Daniel crouched beside the mark.
It wasn't just mud.
There were tiny grains of white sand mixed into it.
Beach sand.
He frowned.
The nearest beach was nearly twenty minutes away.
Neither he nor Olivia had been there recently.
Charlie suddenly screamed.
Daniel turned.
The macaw had spread both wings wide.
Its feathers stood on end.
The bird wasn't excited.
It was frightened.
Then Charlie shouted one sentence that made Daniel's blood run cold.
“Hide! He's coming!”
The words echoed through the mansion.
At that exact moment...
The smart-home doorbell chimed.
Someone...
Was standing outside.
