Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN IN THE SILVER-BLUE DRESSSeraphina kept the silver-blue gown from gala for almost two years.

Why?

She did not know.

Evidence photographs preserved incident, but actual dress belonged her after legal release.

She hung in back of closet.

She stopped wearing it.

One evening she took out.

Champagne stain professionally removed.

Perfect.

She hated.

The gown represented person she had been:

beautiful,

powerful,

cruel,

terrified.

She considered burning.

Too dramatic.

Donated? Someone else could enjoy.

She sold at charity auction, disclosed history? That would make spectacle. Better she gave to costume archive anonymously? Hmm.

She ultimately cut small fabric square and threw rest into textile recycling? Symbolic but not huge. Could just donate to theater. She did.

More important:

riding crop.

Police had retained as evidence of harassment incident? Since no direct strike, maybe no criminal charge, but disorderly conduct? She faced civil settlement with Marina? Marina didn't sue. Household code. Still object.

The crop returned.

Seraphina took to stable.

She had ridden since six.

She could not use.

Her trainer asked.

“Sell.”

She sold equipment, bought new simple crop? The object not evil. But she recognized weaponization.

At therapy, she admitted:

“I didn’t intend hit Marina.”

“Do you believe she knew?”

“No.”

“Then raising it mattered.”

Yes.

Threat.

She contacted Marina.

“I want to say one specific thing.”

“I’m sorry I made you think I might hit you.”

Marina paused.

“That is different from apologizing for tray.”

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

Specific accountability.

Marina eventually said:

“I forgive you for that night.”

Seraphina cried.

Marina continued:

“I don’t erase it.”

“I know.”

“Forgiveness is not invitation back to my life.”

“I know.”

Then Marina smiled slightly.

“You’re already annoyingly in it.”

Seraphina laughed.

They had become something.

Not friends like Teresa/Cecilia.

Maybe future.

Then Enzo proposed? Not yet.

He and Seraphina had been back together a year.

One night at her condo, he said:

“I’m thinking about marriage again.”

She froze.

“Are you proposing?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“I want discuss.”

They did.

Kids.

Money.

Careers.

Monogamy.

Privacy.

Family.

Seraphina said:

“If I ever want someone else, I tell you before touching them.”

Enzo:

“I need you to tell me before emotional affair too.”

She nodded.

Enzo:

“If I disappear into work, don’t punish by guessing.”

“Tell me.”

Good.

They scheduled couples therapy quarterly even when fine.

Not magical.

Then months later he proposed privately at home.

No gala.

No families.

No corporate documents.

Simple ring, not enormous? Still rich but chosen by Seraphina? He used placeholder band then they choose together. Nice.

“Will you marry me because you want me, not because anyone gains anything?”

She laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Prenup first.”

“Obviously.”

They married six months later at city clerk? Maybe small estate ceremony. 28 guests.

Marina invited.

She stood not bridesmaid automatically. Seraphina asked, Marina declined.

“I’m not ready for symbolism.”

Seraphina accepted.

Marina attended with Gabriel.

At reception, a server spilled champagne on Seraphina’s shoe.

Everyone nearest went silent.

Seraphina looked down.

Then at server.

“Please don’t clean my shoe.”

People laughed nervously.

She smiled.

“It’s fine.”

Marina watched.

Not staged.

Life sometimes offers callbacks.

She raised glass.

May you like

No big reconciliation.

But she believed change.
