Chapter 9 - THE MAN SERAPHINA CHOSE TWICESeraphina Valli had loved Enzo.

She also slept with Lorenzo Vale twice.

Those truths made everyone around her uncomfortable because people preferred betrayal simple.

If she loved Enzo, why cheat?

If she cheated, how could love be real?

Her therapist asked her to stop treating contradiction as evidence of mystery.

“You wanted two incompatible things.”

“What?”

“Security and escape.”

Seraphina hated.

Accurate.

Her father built life around performance:

best schools,

correct bodies,

correct partners,

correct friends.

When Seraphina dated Lorenzo in college, August called him “good enough for summer.”

Lorenzo’s family had money, but not Valli-level influence.

Enzo Caravelli was different.

Marriage to him would place Seraphina at center of Westchester power.

August encouraged.

Seraphina resisted initially precisely because father liked idea.

Then she actually fell for Enzo.

That complicated rebellion.

Enzo was controlled, private, intelligent.

He did not flatter her.

She liked making him lose composure.

Their first year was passionate.

Trips.

Arguments.

Sex.

Late-night pasta in kitchen when staff asleep.

Real.

Then engagement pressure began.

August spoke to Enzo’s uncle.

Salvatore spoke to Enzo.

Wedding became business date.

Enzo withdrew emotionally because father’s recent death still raw.

Seraphina interpreted distance as rejection.

She called Lorenzo.

First meeting coffee.

Then drinks.

Then hotel.

She cried afterward.

Lorenzo said:

“Leave him.”

She said:

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“I love him.”

“Then why are you here?”

No answer.

Second time occurred after engagement.

Worse.

Seraphina had promised herself never again.

She failed.

Then cut contact.

August somehow learned and used.

When scandal broke, Lorenzo offered public statement taking equal responsibility.

Seraphina refused.

“I don’t need a man to announce he seduced me.”

Good.

She owned.

Her cooperation with trust case intensified.

August removed her as director from Valli Foundation.

Froze family credit cards.

Threatened to challenge her trust distributions.

Seraphina hired independent lawyer.

For first time she reviewed own finances.

She was wealthy independently—inheritance from grandmother around $6 million—but much lifestyle funded by family office.

She could live comfortably.

Not like before.

She sold leased Bentley? It wasn't owned. She returned.

Moved from family-owned Upper East Side townhouse to condo she personally owned.

Humbling.

Not poverty.

She did not pretend.

One night Marina received a text:

Do you know how embarrassing it is that I thought buying groceries myself counted as adversity?

Marina laughed.

Very.

Seraphina:

Thank you.

They had begun exchanging occasional messages.

Not friendship exactly.

Shared enemy August, shared connection Enzo.

Marina remained cautious.

Then Seraphina provided decisive email.

August to Salvatore one month before gala:

Once marriage documents execute, Bellucci exposure becomes consolidated liability. If the daughter remains ignorant, resolve internally after close. If she surfaces before, delay wedding.

Salvatore:

She works inside house. Watch her.

August:

Seraphina has eyes on staff.

Marina read.

Seraphina looked sick.

“He used me.”

Marina said:

“You also used staff.”

Seraphina nodded.

“I know.”

No comforting rewrite.

Enzo read email and felt rage.

They had turned his engagement into legal shield.

He called Salvatore.

No answer.

Then board meeting.

Caravelli family holding company removed Salvatore from advisory role pending investigation.

Some cousins objected.

“Family private.”

Enzo said:

“No.”

One cousin:

“You’re siding with woman we barely know.”

Enzo looked at Marina’s empty chair—she had refused attend because not board member.

“I’m siding with documents.”

That mattered.

Then Marina decided civil settlement terms.

She wanted:

full restoration and accounting,

independent trustee,

public correction of record saying Teresa did not embezzle,

reimbursement legal fees,

no nondisclosure,

no clause preventing cooperation with prosecutors.

August refused correction.

He claimed Teresa matter disputed.

Marina walked.

Three weeks later, after prosecutors signaled current-document case advancing, August returned.

He agreed.

Public statement:

Records now establish that historical allegations of misappropriation against Teresa Bellucci were unsupported and that funds intended for Marina Bellucci were improperly consolidated into family-managed entities without valid beneficiary authorization.

Marina cried reading.

Not because of millions.

Teresa’s name.

She took statement to cemetery in New Haven.

Placed copy beneath small stone.

“Mom.”

Wind.

No answer.

“I got your name back.”

She sat on grass for an hour.

Enzo did not attend.

She had asked to go alone.

He respected.

At home, she opened locket.

It did not contain key.

Just a tiny faded photograph under glass she had never removed.

Cecilia and Teresa.

Young.

Smiling.

On back, etched:

Peace is not silence.

Marina had never noticed because backing plate stuck.

She laughed.

Of course.

Cecilia.

The message felt almost too perfect, but real engraving authenticated old.

Marina texted Enzo photo.

He answered:

Mom really had no chill.

She laughed.

Sibling texting.

Then Seraphina arrived at cemetery? No, too much.

Instead she visited Teresa’s grave weeks later privately after asking Marina.

Marina said yes.

Seraphina left white flowers and no note.

Why?

“I needed to apologize to someone who couldn’t benefit from it.”

Marina did not know what to say.

That was perhaps first moment she began to believe Seraphina’s remorse could outlive consequences.

Still not forgiveness.

Meanwhile August’s civil settlement did not stop criminal case.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, falsification of trust records, and obstruction related to recent merger documentation. Salvatore faced similar but narrower charges.

Old actions contextual evidence.

Current acts prosecutable.

No arrests at gala.

They surrendered through counsel.

American realism.

August’s mugshot never dramatic.

He wore gray suit.

Seraphina watched arraignment on phone.

Her father pleaded not guilty.

He later called.

“You did this.”

She answered:

“No.”

“You kept doing it long enough for law to catch up.”

He hung up.

She cried.

Loving parent does not disappear because charges.

Enzo understood.

He texted:

You okay?

She answered:

No. Don’t come.

He respected.

Old relationship boundaries.

Marina noticed Enzo still cared.

“Do you want her back?”

He looked.

“I want parts.”

“That’s not same.”

“No.”

“Could you forgive sex?”

“Maybe.”

“Could I trust her after father secrecy?”

“I don’t know.”

Marina nodded.

“No hurry.”

Enzo smiled.

“You giving relationship advice?”

“I’ve been single two years.”

“Exactly.”

She threw napkin.

Their family bond became ordinary enough for teasing.

That was how Marina knew DNA had stopped feeling like laboratory fact.

He was becoming brother.

May you like

Not because of money.

Because he learned when to shut up.
