Chapter 12 - THE LOCKED WINGThe west family wing had been restricted for months before gala.

Lenora told staff renovations.

In reality, no major renovation permits.

She used corridor around secret room privately.

Why?

It contained archive access.

Caroline’s old estate files stored nearby.

Lenora and Adrian copied trust documents there.

A housekeeper named Rose Kim found scanner setup once.

Lenora said foundation work.

No reason question.

The room itself dated Prohibition, likely document concealment.

Historical irony.

Family always hid things in walls.

Roland had portrait removed temporarily.

Emmett panicked when contractors suggested sealing door immediately.

“I want see.”

Dr. Morton allowed controlled.

He entered room with therapist and Roland.

Light on.

Door fully open.

No one behind.

He stood.

Then said:

“It’s smaller.”

Trauma makes spaces huge.

He chose to leave.

They did not seal yet.

Later transformed? At end.

The archive files revealed Caroline’s memo:

future spouses no authority over trust.

Lenora had read.

That may have intensified resentment.

She wrote in notes:

C designed structure to make me permanent outsider.

But Caroline wrote before Lenora existed.

Not personal.

Lenora personalized.

Common.

Another file:

Roland himself signed family-office authorization letting Adrian access trust reporting “for consolidated tax efficiency.”

That became gateway.

Roland felt guilty.

Meredith:

“You authorized reporting, not fraud.”

“But without—”

“No.”

“Do not steal perpetrators’ agency to punish yourself.”

May you like

Good.

Still he tightened future.
