Chapter 19 - WHAT HAPPENED TO EMMETT’S MOTHERCaroline’s history becomes central because Lenora framed her as controlling from grave.

Roland revisits marriage.
Caroline had set trust because she knew Roland too generous and family office too centralized.
She did not distrust future spouse specifically.
She distrusted systems.
In last months, she recorded messages for Emmett at milestones:
10, 16, graduation, wedding maybe.
Roland had stored with trustee, not watched.
At Dr. Morton suggestion, Emmett gets age-10 video when ready? At 8 maybe not.
But one message for Roland discovered:
“Don’t make me saint.”
She jokes.
“I was impatient, vain about garden, and I nearly left you twice.”
She says biggest fear not death but that Roland would replace presence with infrastructure.
Roland cries.
He had.
Caroline also suspected family office advisor culture too opaque; memo specifically mentions Adrian? She met him once and wrote “too smooth.” Not evidence crime, but warning.
Lenora found these files and felt judged by dead woman.
Again.
Talia learns Caroline through Roland gradually, not competing.
She says:
“I’m not interested in replacing anyone.”
Good.
Roland:
May you like
“I don’t want you to.”
Healthy.
