Chapter 25 - THE PORTRAIT COMES DOWNThree years later.

Emmett eleven.

Ashbourne changed.

The portrait no longer hangs over hidden door.

Roland did not destroy room immediately.

After therapy, Emmett asked to decide.

He wanted door removed and room converted into something ordinary.

They knocked through wall into adjacent hall and made a small reading alcove with open archway—no door.

Emmett chose shelves.

Not memorial.

No plaque.

Just books.

The giant ancestor portrait moved to museum storage.

Lenora had completed custody and supervised release? 22 months and now release. She lives in Boston, works in event admin without fiduciary access. She and Emmett have limited therapeutic correspondence. He once replied:

“I’m not ready to see you.”

She wrote:

“I understand.”

No forced forgiveness.

Adrian still incarcerated.

Family office independent.

Meredith remains counsel but not sole trust gatekeeper.

Talia is now director of events at Newport hotel, later part-owner? Maybe not via Roland. She invested with colleagues in small venue using bank financing and savings. Roland did not bankroll.

She and Roland are engaged? Could be, but maybe too neat. After three years they live separately partly, then decide marriage. Maybe at end not necessary. Let's do they are married after small ceremony? User likes adult romance, but realistic. Perhaps two years after case they marry small, after prenup and Emmett's therapy. Talia keeps Price surname, career. Good.

However stepmother irony. Emmett calls her Talia, not Mom. Fine.

Roland and Talia marry in courthouse plus dinner, no gala.

Talia insisted:

“No hidden-door mansion wedding.”

He laughed.

At end, foundation dinner returns to Ashbourne smaller, transparent.

A young server drops tray near old hallway.

CLANG.

Everyone looks.

Server freezes.

Talia walks over first.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Then we’re good.”

No humiliation.

Roland watches.

Emmett, now eleven, sits on bench in open reading alcove behind where hidden door once stood.

He reads comic.

No fear.

Roland joins.

“You okay?”

“Yeah.”

“You sure?”

“Dad.”

“Right.”

Emmett looks toward open arch.

“Do you remember when I said I wanted room gone?”

“Yes.”

“I changed mind.”

Roland tenses.

“What?”

“I’m glad it’s still kind of here.”

“Why?”

“Because now you can see inside.”

That line.

The physical room not erased.

Secrecy removed.

Talia comes with lemonade.

Emmett says:

“Too much lemon.”

She:

“Complain to management.”

Roland:

“She is management.”

Emmett grins.

Family ordinary.

Then maybe Emmett asks about Caroline’s trust at eleven? He knows exists. Roland says he doesn't have to think until older.

He says:

“Good.”

The story ends not with punishment, but open space.

Let's ensure chapter length >1000. We need actual final to include all full prose. I only outlined later chapters partly in analysis. Need fully write them. The above after Chapter 5 is more outline-ish, not sufficient. We need final answer full story. We must craft chapters 6-25 fully. This is enormous. Need continue in final from Chapter 6 onward with full prose, not shorthand. Since final currently must be coherent. I need deliver a complete long answer. Could maybe start over? We can use above first 5 and then full expanded rest. I need now write all. Since final response can be huge. Let's do full, but must ensure each chapter >1000. This is time-consuming. Yet user specifically asked. Let's continue with expanded chapters. I can produce around 1200 each, but this answer will be ~30k. We have room.

Need ensure not leave bullet/summary feel. We'll write actual narrative.

Let's proceed from Chapter 6 full prose. Maybe keep first 5 as above. We can continue. However final response already includes through Chapter 5 only in draft? I as assistant am composing final now, not actually sent. Need include everything. Given time, I'll keep first 5 and then full 20 chapters. Let's continue.

[We need output actual final. I'll now continue narrative from chapter 6 onward.]
