Chapter 10 - GRANDMA NEVER LEFT USPolice reached the private care home at 3:17 a.m.

The property sat behind a tall metal fence beneath the flight path of arriving airplanes.

Its white shutters matched Eleanor’s description.

Preston Vale stood in the driveway.

He claimed the facility provided lawful private recovery services.

Detective Blake presented the emergency warrant.

Preston stepped aside.

Officers found Eleanor in a locked bedroom on the second floor.

She was frightened and dehydrated but conscious.

Her short silver hair had not been brushed, and she wore the same pale lavender robe visible in a photograph Margaret sent Michael eleven days earlier.

The photograph was supposed to have been taken at the rehabilitation center.

Margaret had lied about the location.

Eleanor reached for Detective Blake.

“My grandsons.”

“They’re safe.”

“Margaret said Michael sent her.”

“He didn’t.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I knew he wouldn’t.”

An ambulance transported her to Baylor University Medical Center.

Michael met her there.

He left the boys with Officer Mendoza and a trusted neighbor for less than an hour.

When he entered the hospital room, Eleanor stared at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Michael crossed the room and took her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“For what?”

“For not coming sooner. For believing Margaret.”

“She was careful.”

“I should have called you directly.”

“You did.”

Michael looked confused.

“I telephoned you every Sunday.”

“I never received those calls.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“Margaret answered your office line. She said you didn’t want to speak with me while I was confused.”

Michael realized the scale of the deception.

Margaret controlled both sides.

She told Eleanor that Michael refused contact.

She told Michael that Eleanor could not manage calls.

Isolation had been built from two convincing lies.

“Daniel thought you forgot him,” Michael said.

Eleanor began to cry.

“Bring him here.”

Daniel arrived with Noah before sunrise.

He paused at the hospital-room entrance.

Eleanor opened her arms.

“My brave boy.”

Daniel ran to her.

Noah followed more slowly.

He touched Eleanor’s hand before allowing her to hold him.

“Grandma,” Daniel whispered, “I wanted to tell you.”

“I know.”

“I thought you didn’t want us.”

Eleanor held both boys close.

“There was not one day when I stopped wanting to come home.”

Michael watched them.

He understood that returning Eleanor to the mansion would not repair everything.

But it would break Margaret’s most important lie.

Eleanor explained that Margaret began managing her medication after the hip injury.

Some days, Eleanor felt unusually sleepy.

Documents appeared when she was barely awake.

She remembered signing a meal plan and an insurance form.

She never signed a deed.

She never appointed Margaret as sole power of attorney.

“And Daniel’s boarding-school application?” Michael asked.

Eleanor looked horrified.

“I would never send him away.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around her hand.

A doctor entered with preliminary blood-test results.

Eleanor had been receiving a sedating medication not listed in her legitimate treatment plan.

The medication could cause confusion and memory loss.

Margaret had used Eleanor’s symptoms to support the claim that she lacked capacity while simultaneously obtaining her signature.

Detective Blake arrived with more news.

Preston Vale had been detained.

Records at the care home showed payments from Hayes Residential Holdings.

But Margaret was gone.

Her sedan had been found abandoned near the airport.

On the passenger seat, police discovered a photograph of Daniel and Noah.

Across Daniel’s face, Margaret had written three words:

HE KNOWS TOO MUCH.
