THIS HOUSE ISN’T YOURS / Chapter 16 / 25

Chapter 16 - THE CALL FROM THE HOSPITALPolice arrived before Michael entered the study.

The window had been broken from outside.

No one remained inside.

The original codicil was gone.

So were several documents connecting Margaret to the false deed.

The intruder avoided every motion detector.

That required knowledge of the security system.

Margaret possessed that knowledge.

But camera footage showed only a hooded figure moving through the garden.

Michael checked the boys.

Daniel had locked the bedroom door and called the emergency number exactly as Officer Mendoza taught him.

“You did the right thing,” Michael said.

Daniel looked at Noah.

“I didn’t go downstairs.”

“That was the right thing too.”

The words mattered.

Courage did not always mean confronting danger.

Sometimes it meant refusing to follow it.

Police found muddy footprints near the broken window.

They also found a thin cut in the glass.

The intruder removed one panel precisely before entering.

Margaret had help.

Detective Blake suspected a former mansion-security contractor named Owen Pike.

Company records showed Margaret paid him twice during the previous month.

Officers began searching for both.

Eleanor was taken to the hospital after the break-in caused a dangerous rise in her blood pressure.

Michael stayed beside her.

“I brought this into your home,” she whispered.

“Margaret did.”

“I trusted her.”

“So did I.”

“I should have seen it.”

Michael took her hand.

“Daniel thought he should have stopped her too. We cannot teach him that blame belongs to the people she deceived.”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“When did you become wiser than your mother?”

“When my seven-year-old son had to explain what courage looked like.”

A nurse entered with a telephone.

“There’s a call for Mrs. Carter.”

Only family knew the room number.

Michael answered.

Margaret spoke.

“Your mother looks tired.”

He looked immediately toward the window.

The hospital room faced a parking structure.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

Police security was alerted.

“Why did you take the codicil?”

“Because Eleanor promised me something.”

“She promised you nothing.”

“I gave that family everything.”

“You were paid.”

Margaret’s breathing changed.

“Money was not what I wanted.”

“What did you want?”

“To belong.”

Michael looked at Eleanor.

“Belonging is not something you create by removing everyone else.”

Margaret became silent.

Then she said, “Ask your mother why Laura never trusted you with the truth.”

The call ended.

Detective Blake traced it to a prepaid phone moving away from the hospital.

Surveillance showed a dark sedan leaving the parking structure.

Officers pursued it.

The driver was Owen Pike.

Margaret was not inside.

In the trunk, police found the stolen codicil and files.

Owen agreed to identify Margaret’s hiding place in exchange for consideration.

He said she had rented a furnished house near White Rock Lake.

A tactical team entered before dawn.

The house was empty.

On one wall hung dozens of photographs of the Carter family.

Eleanor in the garden.

Michael at the airport.

Daniel walking to school.

Noah sleeping in his nursery.

The final photograph showed Laura beside her car on the day she died.

A red circle had been drawn around the rear tire.
