THIS HOUSE ISN’T YOURS / Chapter 14 / 25

Chapter 14 - A HOUSE FULL OF SECRETSDaniel sat at the dining table with Michael and Detective Blake.

Noah slept upstairs beside Eleanor’s nurse.

No one pressured Daniel.

Blake placed photographs of several rooms before him.

“Margaret may have carried a small painting,” he said. “Do you remember seeing it?”

Daniel looked at each image.

The living room.

Eleanor’s study.

Laura’s dressing room.

The upstairs hallway.

Then he touched a photograph of Margaret’s bedroom.

“She told me never to go there.”

“Did you?”

“Once.”

Michael leaned closer.

“Why?”

“Noah’s blanket was inside.”

Daniel explained that Margaret used the toddler’s favorite blanket as punishment.

When Noah cried, she took it to her room.

Daniel entered while Margaret was outside.

He found the blanket beneath her bed.

Beside it was a painting wrapped in a black coat.

“What did you do?”

“I took Noah’s blanket.”

“Did you touch the painting?”

Daniel nodded.

“Something fell out.”

“What?”

“A yellow paper.”

“Where did you put it?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“In my sweater.”

“Why?”

“It had Grandma’s name.”

Michael took his hand.

“Where is it now?”

“Margaret found me.”

The caregiver caught Daniel in the hallway.

She searched his pockets and recovered the page.

Then she forced him to stand barefoot on the marble floor for nearly three hours.

“She said if I told anyone, Noah would stand there next time.”

Michael looked away before his anger frightened Daniel.

Detective Blake kept his voice calm.

“What did Margaret do with the yellow page?”

“She put it inside a crystal plate box.”

The mansion’s formal dining room contained cabinets filled with crystal dinnerware.

Police searched every box.

Most held plates wrapped in tissue paper.

One box contained only an auction receipt and an envelope.

The envelope held Eleanor’s signed codicil.

It clearly prohibited the transfer Margaret claimed Eleanor intended.

Alongside it was a list of assets Margaret planned to sell.

The mansion.

Eleanor’s jewelry.

Laura’s remaining belongings.

Even Daniel’s education trust.

Michael read the final item twice.

Margaret had attempted to liquidate money intended for a seven-year-old child she described as dangerous.

Detective Blake found another envelope.

Inside were draft adoption-consent forms for Noah.

Margaret planned to petition for Daniel’s institutional placement and arrange for Noah to enter a private foster home connected to Preston’s care facility.

Once both children were removed, Michael could be portrayed as unfit and Eleanor as incapacitated.

No family member would remain in the mansion.

“This was never only about the house,” Michael said.

Eleanor held the codicil.

“It was about removing everyone who belonged in it.”

Police compared the forms with Preston’s records.

One payment had already been made to a placement consultant.

The consultant agreed to cooperate.

She claimed Margaret said Noah’s father abandoned him and his older brother was abusive.

The story had been prepared months earlier.

At the end of the search, Blake opened the luxury dining table’s center drawer.

Inside was a small wireless earpiece matching the one Margaret wore during the confrontation.

Its memory stored several audio clips.

One captured Margaret speaking with Preston minutes before Michael arrived.

“If Daniel interferes again, I will create enough evidence to remove him by Monday.”

Preston asked, “What about Noah?”

Margaret answered without hesitation.

“Once the older boy is gone, the little one won’t remember anything.”

The next sound on the recording was Noah crying.

Then Margaret told Preston to stay connected while she “handled it.”

Michael had not merely interrupted a cruel lunch.

He had interrupted the final step of a plan.
