Chapter 17 - FINDING GRANDMAThe photograph reopened every question about Laura’s collision.

Detective Blake sent it to the traffic-investigation unit.
The original crash report noted that one rear tire had lost pressure.
Investigators attributed it to road debris.
No tire was preserved after the insurance inspection.
The photograph did not prove tampering.
But it proved Margaret had watched Laura’s vehicle on the day of the accident.
Michael wanted an immediate answer.
Blake refused to give him a false one.
“We investigate evidence, not fear.”
“She told me Laura should have stopped searching.”
“That may be a confession. It may also be manipulation.”
“What am I supposed to do with that?”
“Protect the living while we investigate the dead.”
Michael looked toward Daniel and Noah.
Blake was right.
Margaret wanted him trapped inside the past while she remained free in the present.
The search of the rented house produced valuable evidence.
Police found medication matching what Eleanor received at the illegal care home.
They found forgery practice sheets.
They recovered backup drives containing mansion recordings.
One audio file came from the day Margaret persuaded Eleanor to “give her the house.”
The unedited version revealed the full exchange.
Margaret asked, “Do you want me to have the house prepared for Michael?”
Eleanor answered, “Yes.”
Margaret removed the words prepared for Michael.
The manipulated video was deliberate fraud.
Another recording captured Margaret and Preston discussing Daniel.
“He notices too much,” Preston said.
“Children are easy to discredit,” Margaret answered. “Adults call fear imagination.”
Michael played that line for Daniel only after Dr. Maya Evans advised him how to explain it.
“Margaret knew I was telling the truth?” Daniel asked.
“Yes.”
“Then why did she call me a liar?”
“Because the truth was dangerous to her.”
Daniel looked toward the family photographs.
“Is that why she hid Grandma?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor returned from the hospital with a private nurse selected by the family and verified by police.
Daniel waited at the entrance.
When Eleanor stepped inside, he held out the original brass key.
“This is yours.”
Eleanor closed his fingers around it.
“No. You keep it.”
“Why?”
“Because you opened more than a box.”
They walked together to the study.
The broken window had been repaired.
Eleanor ordered the lock removed from the door.
“No more secret rooms,” she said.
Michael looked at the hidden wall compartment.
“Some documents should remain secured.”
“Secured is not the same as hidden from family.”
They moved the papers into a bank vault with access shared between Eleanor and Michael.
The mansion’s authority no longer belonged to one person.
That evening, police located Margaret.
A license-plate camera recorded her entering a rural property south of Dallas.
The house belonged to her older sister, Caroline Hayes.
Caroline claimed Margaret arrived unexpectedly and asked to stay one night.
Police surrounded the property.
Margaret walked outside with both hands visible.
She surrendered without resistance.
Reporters gathered as officers placed her in a cruiser.
Margaret looked directly into one camera.
“Ask Michael what happened to Laura.”
At the police station, she requested an attorney.
Then she offered a deal.

She would reveal the truth about Laura’s final day.
But only if Daniel came to hear it.
