THIS HOUSE ISN’T YOURS / Chapter 7 / 25

Chapter 7 - THE MARK ON DANIEL’S FACEA pediatrician examined both boys that evening.

Daniel’s cheek was swollen but did not require treatment.

Noah had faint bruising on one upper arm and signs of dehydration.

The doctor asked how much the toddler had been eating.

Michael could not answer.

Margaret sent him daily reports.

Every report said Noah ate well.

Daniel sat on the examination table.

“She puts food on the plate for pictures.”

Michael looked at him.

“What happens after the pictures?”

“Sometimes she takes it away.”

“Why?”

“If Noah makes a mess.”

The doctor documented the statement.

Michael felt shame settle heavily across his shoulders.

He had received those photographs during meetings and flights.

He replied with heart emojis.

He praised Margaret for keeping the boys happy.

He never called long enough to see what happened after the camera was lowered.

“Did you eat?” he asked Daniel.

“Most days.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“If I gave Noah some of mine, Margaret said I was wasting food.”

The doctor left the room to contact child-protection investigators.

Michael crouched in front of his son.

“I need you to tell me everything.”

“Will Margaret hear?”

“Not tonight.”

“What about tomorrow?”

“I’m going to make sure she can’t come near you.”

“Can you promise?”

Michael hesitated.

He had made too many promises before understanding the danger.

“I can promise I will not leave you alone with her again.”

Daniel studied his father’s face.

Then he nodded.

Margaret made him stand barefoot on the marble floor when he disobeyed.

She locked the playroom.

She told Noah that crying made people leave.

She removed the telephone from Daniel’s room after he tried to call Eleanor.

Once, she packed his clothes into a suitcase and placed it beside the entrance for an entire night.

“She said a car was coming for me.”

Michael swallowed.

“Did one come?”

“No.”

“Did she tell you where it would take you?”

“A school where nobody would believe me.”

The boarding application.

Margaret had not invented the threat.

She was preparing it.

At the mansion, police obtained security records from the alarm system.

The living-room cameras had not failed.

Someone with administrator access disabled them thirteen minutes before Noah’s lunch.

The user account belonged to Margaret.

She expected the confrontation.

She simply did not expect Michael to come home.

The front-door camera remained active because it operated on a separate circuit.

Its audio captured Daniel shouting, “Don’t touch him!”

It captured Margaret threatening to throw both boys out.

Then it recorded the door opening and Michael entering.

The incident was no longer only Daniel’s word against hers.

When Michael and the boys returned home, Officer Mendoza showed him the footage.

Daniel listened from the hallway.

Margaret’s voice filled the screen.

Do you want me to throw both of you out?

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s what she said.”

Michael placed an arm around him.

“I know.”

The next clip showed Margaret reaching for Noah.

Then the door opened.

The camera did not show the slap, but it proved she lied about the threat.

Officer Mendoza received a message.

Margaret had been released pending further investigation.

A temporary no-contact order prohibited her from approaching the boys for seventy-two hours.

Only seventy-two.

Then Michael noticed something in the video.

Just before Margaret reached for Noah, she glanced toward the entrance.

She knew someone might be arriving.

Michael enlarged the image.

A small wireless earpiece was visible beneath her blonde hair.

May you like

She had been listening to someone during the confrontation.

And the security system logs showed a remote user connected from inside Eleanor’s missing rehabilitation file.
