Chapter 14 - BEATRICE SPEAKS ONE SENTENCE

Two years after stroke, Beatrice could speak short phrases.
Slow.
Rough.
Effortful.
She still used wheelchair outside home but walked short distances with walker.
One Sunday Gavin visited with Tyler.
Monica was due to join for supervised family lunch? By now no-contact order with Beatrice had expired but Beatrice controlled contact. She agreed to brief meeting after therapist consultation.
First time.
Monica arrived trembling.
Beatrice sat by window.
Tyler beside.
Gavin stood back.
Monica approached.
“Hello, Beatrice.”
Beatrice looked.
Monica cried.
“I’m sorry.”
Beatrice took time.
Then said, rough:
“You… hurt… me.”
Monica’s face crumpled.
“Yes.”
Beatrice continued:
“You… hurt… Tyler.”
“Yes.”
Long pause.
“You… hurt… you.”
Monica covered mouth.
Beatrice’s voice failed.
She used tablet.
DO NOT WASTE IT
Monica stared.
“Waste what?”
YOUR LIFE
Not forgiveness.
A command.
Monica sobbed.
Beatrice did not hug.
She did allow Monica sit at table.
That was enough.
Tyler watched.
Later asked:
“Grandma forgave?”
Gavin:
“No.”
“She chose to talk.”
“Same?”
“No.”
May you like
Good.
