Chapter 7 - THE SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND

The $612,000 did not land in Monica’s checking account.
That distinction saved her from a much more straightforward theft case.
Instead, it was invested in Hollis Harbor Opportunity Fund II, a private real-estate vehicle buying distressed commercial properties and converting them into boutique wellness and medical spaces.
One portfolio company was Lumen House, the wellness club Monica’s friend had founded.
Monica held a 7% stake through an LLC called MKR Ventures.
Her initials.
If Lumen House succeeded, Beatrice’s investment could raise value of Monica’s stake indirectly.
Conflict.
Undisclosed.
Worse, $92,000 of the investment was used in bridge financing to Lumen House specifically.
Gavin stared at forensic report.
“You have got to be kidding.”
Margaret shook head.
“No.”
Derek’s firm had overridden suitability controls using power-of-attorney document.
The new POA appeared notarized.
Notary:
Celeste Morgan, an employee at a mobile notary service.
She testified she never met Beatrice.
Her commission stamp had been misused by a contract clerk working for Derek.
That clerk said Derek’s operations director told him document was “client-executed.”
No one independently verified.
Again, system of assumptions.
Could Derek claim ignorance?
Possibly of exact forgery.
But he signed investment approval despite knowing Beatrice impaired and Monica interested.
Regulators cared.
SEC/state securities? Hollis advisor may be registered. Connecticut Department of Banking opened inquiry.
Derek’s firm placed him on leave.
He lost more quickly than Monica.
His clients panicked.
His ex-wife filed motion concerning support based on hidden financial exposure.
Consequences spread.
Derek called Gavin through counsel offering to unwind investment immediately.
Gavin wanted prison, not refund.
Margaret said:
“We pursue mother’s interest, not your anger.”
They accepted return with interest into frozen protective account, without waiver of claims.
Beatrice’s assets were secured under temporary conservator? But she has capacity. Better court appointed temporary financial monitor? Since she has capacity, she can revoke POA and designate trusted agent. Through AAC, Beatrice executed revocation with attorney and witnesses, and reinstated Gavin+Nora under prior document. To avoid Gavin conflict, they appoint independent professional co-trustee temporarily. Good.
Beatrice chose.
That was important.
At signing, attorney asked via AAC:
“Do you want Gavin controlling alone?”
Beatrice selected:
NO
Gavin laughed.
“Fair.”
She selected:
NORA
PROFESSIONAL
Nora smirked.
“Mom always liked me better.”
Beatrice blinked twice.
No.
Tyler laughed.
Humor returned.
Then Monica’s criminal exposure became real.
Her attorney negotiated.
Potential charges:
financial exploitation of elderly person;
forgery/conspiracy depending evidence;
reckless neglect due delayed 911.
The state did not believe she intended Beatrice’s death.
Important.
But delay and financial manipulation were serious.
Monica considered plea with suspended jail? For substantial financial exploitation maybe actual incarceration possible. Let's make eventual plea later.
Before that, family court.
Gavin filed for legal separation and temporary custody plan.
He did not immediately file divorce.
Why?
Partly Tyler.
Partly uncertainty.
Partly he still loved Monica.
That embarrassed him.
Therapist said:
“Love is not acquittal.”
Useful.
Tyler’s therapist recommended supervised visitation initially due child’s fear, not punishment.
Monica agreed reluctantly.
At first session, she brought Tyler a new gaming console.
Therapist stopped.
“No gifts.”
Monica looked humiliated.
“I’m his mother.”
“Then give him attention.”
Tyler sat.
Monica asked about school.
He answered one word.
Finally she said:
“I miss you.”
Tyler’s face hardened.
“You didn’t miss Grandma.”
Monica cried.
“I was angry at her.”
“You said die.”
“Yes.”
“Did you mean?”
She looked at therapist.
Therapist did not rescue.
“Sometimes I wished the situation would go away.”
“I said something terrible.”
“That’s not answer.”
Monica swallowed.
“For a moment, yes.”
“I wished she would die because I thought everything would be easier.”
“I am ashamed.”
Tyler’s eyes filled.
He stood.
“I want go.”
Session ended.
That honesty did not earn forgiveness.
But it mattered more than denial.
Meanwhile Gavin returned to work only part time.
His company’s board asked whether family crisis would affect performance.
He almost laughed.
He had spent years treating family as thing that fit around work.
Now work had to fit around family.
He delegated.
A younger executive surprised him by doing job well.
Gavin realized another control issue.
He had believed indispensability was virtue.
It had helped create absence.
Again, not cause Monica’s acts.
But part of his life architecture.
At home, Beatrice moved from wheelchair to assisted walker for short distances in therapy.
Speech remained severely limited.
One afternoon she managed:
“Tea.”
Tyler cheered like touchdown.
She rolled eyes.
He laughed.
Then Beatrice typed message for Gavin:
MONICA NEEDS PAY CONSEQUENCE
NOT DESTROYED
Gavin looked.
“You don’t want prison?”
Beatrice selected:
COURT DECIDE
Of course.
She trusted process more than rage.
Then:
YOU STILL LOVE?
Gavin stared.
His mother had always been intrusive.
Stroke did not cure.
He answered:
“Yes.”
Beatrice selected:
IDIOT
Tyler, reading over shoulder, burst out laughing.
Gavin did too.
Then Beatrice added:
LOVE NOT SAME TRUST
He nodded.
“I know.”
She touched his hand.
Slowly.
The family was learning their oldest member had lost speech, not wisdom.
That evening Gavin found a voicemail Monica had sent but deleted before delivery? Maybe on shared family cloud? Better Monica sent email unsent? Let's do voice memo to herself discovered in phone extraction provided through criminal discovery later.
Recorded two weeks before stroke.
Monica crying:
“I don’t know how to get out.”
“If Gavin finds debt, he’ll leave me.”
“If Beatrice tells him about Derek, he’ll hate me.”
“Derek thinks I should choose him but I don’t know if he even loves me.”
“I wish somebody would decide for me.”
Gavin listened.
He felt anger.
Then grief.
Monica had been drowning and chose secrecy every time a door opened.
He had not noticed.
That did not make him responsible.
But it made marriage tragedy more complete.
Then next recording:
“I think I might be pregnant.”
Gavin stopped breathing.
The date was during Monica’s affair with Derek.
The next words:
“I don’t know whose it would be.”
May you like
Everything changed again.
