Beatrice’s swallowing improved enough for normal soft food.
One afternoon Tyler, fifteen, visited.
She wanted tomato soup.
He picked spoon instinctively.
Beatrice shook head.
She lifted it herself with left hand.
Slow.
Some spilled.
Tyler reached to help.
She glared.
He stopped.
She managed.
Then said roughly:
“I… can.”
He smiled.
“Yes, ma’am.”
She laughed.
Food at corner mouth.
Tyler handed napkin instead of wiping.
