Chapter 13 - WHY VANESSA WANTED ELEANOR GONEDaniel’s father, Richard Hayes, had built a regional manufacturing business before selling most of it.

The family trust held investment assets, property interests, and education funds.
Eleanor retained authority over certain distributions.
Daniel had never cared.
He had his own business.
Vanessa did.
More than he knew.
Rebecca uncovered requests from Vanessa to trust administrators.
Could funds be used for a second property?
Could Sophie’s future education trust invest in a private real-estate vehicle?
Could Eleanor delegate authority?
Each request was denied or referred back to Eleanor.
Then came the proposed amendment.
If Eleanor were incapacitated, Vanessa would become one of two successor decision-makers.
Daniel stared at the document.
“Why her?”
“The other was you.”
“So she wanted control beside me.”
“Yes.”
“But I would never approve anything without Mom.”
“Unless you were told your mother was cognitively impaired.”
The plan became clear.
Convince Daniel.
Convince outsiders.
Convince a court if necessary.
Remove Eleanor.
Control access.
If marriage later collapsed, Vanessa would enter custody negotiations from a stronger financial position.
Not brilliant.
Not guaranteed.
But plausible enough for someone obsessed with control.
Eleanor remembered the night Vanessa brought the paper.
“She said it was just practical.”
“Did you read it?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“That I would discuss it with you.”
“And?”
“She said I was making everything difficult.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“The first serious assault happened after?”
Eleanor nodded.
There it was.
Not just dislike.
Resistance.

Vanessa had discovered that Eleanor could say no.
And she could not tolerate it.
