Chapter 16 - ELEANOR’S SECRET GUILTEleanor’s guilt was worse than her bruises.

She believed she had failed twice.

Failed to stop Vanessa early.

Failed to tell Daniel.

One night she said:

“I let Sophie watch me be afraid.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“You showed Sophie someone protected her.”

Eleanor cried.

“She should never have needed protection from her mother.”

“No.”

“I kept thinking Vanessa would calm down.”

“Why?”

“Because I remembered her before.”

There it was.

Vanessa had not always been cruel.

Eleanor remembered after Sophie’s birth.

Vanessa exhausted.

Depressed.

Overwhelmed.

Then better.

Then angry again.

Eleanor kept translating abuse into stress.

Daniel understood.

Because he had done the same with emotional distance.

Eleanor whispered:

“The first time she lifted the bat, it was toward Sophie.”

Daniel already knew.

Hearing it still hurt.

“She had knocked over juice.”

Eleanor’s voice shook.

“Vanessa grabbed the bat from beside the garage door. I don't think she planned it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“But she raised it.”

“Yes.”

“And you stepped between.”

“Yes.”

“Then she hit you.”

Eleanor nodded.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His mother had put her body between a bat and his child.

Seventy-two years old.

Frail.

Bruised.

Still protecting.

Daniel took her hand.

“You saved her.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I should have saved her sooner.”

Daniel replied:

“You saved her when it mattered.”

Neither believed that erased the rest.

But sometimes truth did not need to erase pain.

Only balance it.
